Good midday to all. I hope everyone is doing well.
I have a match on Ancestry.com that goes by the kit moniker "toypenn". Her shared matches with me are all Asa Lewis and Zerah Lewis descendants (some I know; other I assume based on my shared matches with them). Toypenn real name is Phyllis Pennycook and she lives in Pennsylvania. I've shared a few emails with her through Ancestry, though it has been a while since the last. She claims descent from Edmund Lewes, eventually through Edward Lewis b. 1722 NJ and his son Daniel Lewis and Daniel's daughter Phoebe Jackson Lewis. Phoebe's husband in her tree is Daniel Rockwell Brown. From the little I've seen on Phoebe, she left NJ and ended up in Illinois. Phyllis's line goes through Illinois to Wisconsin. Of the few matches I have with individuals claiming descent from Edmund who never went to antebellum south, Phyllis is my strongest match.
Ancestry has us sharing 16 cM in one segment. GEDmatch has us sharing 36.5 cM (quite a descrepency) in one segment on chromosome 7, which for whatever reason appears to be a safe haven for long-living Lewis DNA in my genetic makeup. I have very long segments of matches with Asa's (through his son Eldred S. Lewis) and Zerah Lewis's (mainly through William Crawford Lewis, brother to my great grandfather Dixon Hilliard Lewis) descendants. Dick Bennett, a resident member here, shares over 57 cM in two segments with me on chromosome 7. This chromosome is also the one where nearly all my shared DNA with the descendants Azariah Lewis resides. We don't know how Azariah is connected to us, but he was in Edgefield County SC along with the Samuel Lewis we have focused our attention on as the father of Asa. Zerah and their brothers. My shared DNA with Phyllis on ch 7 overlaps with one known descendant of Zerah and one of Asa. It also overlaps with a match with the curious surname "Whitfield." I have not attempted to triangulate Phyllis's DNA with others, but she is designated a paternal match on Ancestry (which is a pretty good tool but not foolproof).
Going from memory, all of my matches claiming descent from Edmund and whose lines never went south (rather migrating from NJ across the Great Lake states and beyond) claim descent from one of the sons of Edward b. 1722 NJ. Each of these matches share known and suspected Lewis matches with me within the southern descendants of Edmund Lewes (my southern branch).
I'm curious if others share this match, particularly those descended from the sons of Edward. If possible, if you can identify the genetic location of your match to her, and you are willing to share it, it might be meaningful.
As reconstructed from her tree, Phyllis's lineage is:
Edmund > Thomas > Samuel > Edward > Daniel > Phoebe > Bennett Silas Brown > Eveline Amanda Brown > Ada Evelyn Powers > Evelyn Ada Kerr > Marguerite Mae Wincapaw > Phillis Landingham Pennycook.
