As some or all of you may know, Jackie and I matched on Big Y with two shared SNP mutations separating us from the other Big Y testers in our group. These two markers are downstream of the BY42599 that all of us who have tested Big Y at one time had shared as our terminal marker. This is the second match downstream of BY42599, with Ron Durrett and Geoff Lewis also matching on two downstream markers. This match happened last summer, but I've been very busy with other things and did not present it formally or describe it's implications earlier.

If Jackie's research is correct, and I've no reason to believe otherwise, then I and the Southern Branch as we know it are descended from Edmund's second son Thomas, and we are possibly one generation away from completing our link back to Edmund Lewes of Lynn, Massachusetts. If all is correct, my lineage, and shared with the rest of the Southern Branch on the upper reaches, down to myself would be (dates are approximate or the best I have in front of me):

1. Edmund Lewes, b. 1601, UK
2. Thomas Lewis, b. 1633, UK
3. Samuel Lewis, b. 1673, MA Colony
4. Edward Lewis I, b. 1712 or 1722, NJ Colony
5. Unknown, b. about 1750, NJ Colony
6. Zerah Lewis, b. 1800 SC
7. Dixon Hilliard Lewis, b. 1852, GA
8. Marvin Trebor Lewis, b. 1893 TX
9. Joe Dorren Lewis, b. 1913 OK
10. Joel David Lewis, b. 1947 OR

The Unknown generation above is what we likely need to prove. It is possible there could be a second, earlier unknown in place of Edward, but that will take a fair amount of work to determine.

A convenient candidate for the Unknown listed is Edward's son Samuel b. 1754 in NJ. Based on the research of others, there is not a lot of information regarding this individual in NJ. He is convenient because the best option we have for our earliest ancestor in the South is a Samuel Lewis who was in Edgefield County SC just after the Revolutionary War. This individual as a candidate is bolstered by the fact that Asa Lewis and his brother Ira Lewis were living next door to an older Samuel Lewis in the 1820 census for Washington County GA. Samuel's household in that census included unnamed individuals who reasonably fit his presumed family as we have reconstructed it. All the known brothers who are presumed to be Samuel's sons, and who lived to be included in the 1850 census or and beyond, list their place of birth as SC, but for the youngest who lists it as GA. The evidence of this Samuel being our earliest ancestor in the South is strictly circumstantial.

An issue with Edward's son Samuel b. 1754 NJ is this: I have two or three matches on Ancestry who trace their ancestry to this same Samuel. My shared matches with them are definite Lewis matches and include Zerah Lewis and Asa Lewis descendants. They include my niece and my father's first cousin. However, these matches never were in the South. From NJ they crossed to IL and eventually beyond, as did Jackie's ancestors. So, either:

1. These matches have connected themselves to the incorrect son of Edward, or
2. They have linked themselves to the incorrect Samuel Lewis, possibly from a related Lewis lineage, or
3. The South Branch branches from Jackie's lineage prior to Edward, or
4. Samuel had two families, one of which did not go south.

There are issues with the research of these matches, as they identify their Samuel Lewis ancestor as a guy who could not possibly Edward's son. So either they have the incorrect son of Edward or they have identified the incorrect Samuel. I have seen no supporting information that they are descended, or not descended, from Edward's son Samuel. Their error may simply be a case of identifying the wrong person named Samuel Lewis.

So, we are close to reconnecting the Southern Branch to our Northern cousins. But we still have work to do.

That's as I see it. I hope it makes sense.

Hope you all are well.

Hello Dave and good work on the Samuel connection, Dave.

Unfortunately, Early Lewises of Northern New Jersey, by Ralph KimbelPotter, contains the following entry about Samuel Lewis, son of Edward (emphasis mine):

25. SAMUEL LEWIS (5), b. 1 Apr 1754 in Basking Ridge, d. (?). m. LIDIA SQUIRE, 4 Mar 1776 in Hanover Presby Church, Hanover, N.J. Why they married in Hanover, some 10 mi N of Basking Ridge, rather than in the latter town is not clear. They seem to have settled in the Basking Ridge area, perhaps a few miles W in Mendham Twp. Samuel appears with his father, Edward (4) in the Mendham tax lists of 1778 and 1780. A record of Basking Ridge Church members for 1804 includes "Samuel Lewis, son of Edward", but unlike most others in this group, his name is not accompanied by that of a wife, which seems to indicate Lidia had died before this date. Nothing more known.

Lidia, Samuel's wife, died in 1845 in New Jersey. There is no indication that she was married to Samuel at that time.

So if Samuel was in Basking Ridge, NJ in 1804, unmarried, he is probably not the father of Zerah Lewis, born in 1800 in South Carolina.

Also, there is a Samuel Lewis in the 1790 Edgefield, SC Federal Census, along with Joseph, Benjamin and Thomas.

This is nothing definitgive, just more information. Andmore to come!

    Michael

Hi Everyone

I have found that my Asa Lewis born 1784 and enlisted in the War of 1812 from Delaware County, New York; at the time of his birth Delaware County was actually Montgomery County, New York.

I have asked Montgomery County, New York to do some research for me to see if he is from there.

Diane told me to look at when counties were formed and I might figure it out. If Asa can’t be found in Montgomery County then my next stop is Vermont. Because that area was also part of Vermont.

I will let you know if I find anything.

I went back and did a little database research on my matches to NJ descendant cousins. I was incorrect is saying my niece and my father's first cousin were matches to those who traced their lineage back to Edward's son Samuel, b. 1784. My niece (Trudy Vermillion) appears on the match list of a women in PA who traces her lineage back to Edward's son Daniel, b. 1763, m. Anna Stickles. The matches birth surname is Van Landingham. I've communicated with her some through Ancestry. My Dad's first cousin appears to have dropped off the lists of these northern matches for some reason. Maybe she will come back tomorrow.

Toypenn and I share 16cM of DNA, which isn't much, but it is the most of these northern matches. We share matches from the lines of both Asa Lewis line and Zerah Lewis (my line). There is a match at 20cM for a jeffneberman. He has a two-person tree which shows his father in Illinois and Michigan. He has a long Lewis-related match list which makes me suspect his line may be of southern origin that migrated north at some point. I've not had any conversations with him.

My various shared match lists with these northern cousins include both Asa Lewis and Zerah Lewis matches. There are three matches who would trace back to Edward's son Samuel, all through the same lineage. RebeccaHintermeister has the most complete tree for this line. I think both the others are her second cousins, David Lewis and kassandramartens48. I have no shared matches with David, and Kassandra as essentially the same matches as Rebecca.

Hi Joy,
I don't think we have etalked before, as you dna people are WAY brighter than I am on that.
As I do Daughters of the American Revolution,, I handle documents all the time.
The County date is easy, usually.  Just google the County and wikipedia entry will give history of the county and its dates.  Same thing with States and when they formed.
Just fyi, might help.
