21 Savage skulks through verses like a villain in a slasher flick. On the cover of his Slaughter King mixtape he sported a hockey mask like Jason. His mixtape titles all evoke horror gore. His verses are built around heart-racing, hair-bristling anticipation. He preys on victims and terrorizes them, using intimidation and sadism, then jolts through quick shots of graphic violence narrated with stoned apathy. His songs are striking in their bluntness, breathless and macabre.
21 Savage released his second solo album i am > i was in 2018. The project was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2020 Grammys and won for Best Rap Song (a lot featuring J. Cole). 21 collaborated with Metro Boomin on two full-lengths, Savage Mode and Savage Mode II. In 2015, Drake and Future teamed up for the mixtape What A Time To Be Alive.
"Circles" was the song that gave SD his ticket into the spotlight and past a very crowded Chicago rap scene. He keeps a prolific streak running with Just The Beginning, a new mixtape following his debut album Still Blessed and mixtape Life Of A Savage 4. Beats from heavyweights like Young Chop, Tarentino, and Sonny Digital aren't even the tape's biggest strengths when they're put next to SD's unique flow: post-comatose, yet bouncy.
