Hello, lovely garden people! 

We are a little early for our monthly email, but we wanted to give you a few reminders and updates to some excellent resources. Hope you are enjoying this wonderful spring weather!

Don't Miss this Upcoming Event! 
Des Moines Farm to School Workshop
Please consider attending! This workshop will be very valuable for teachers, school staff, food service workers, farmers, gardeners, or anyone else interested in Farm to School. Hosted by National Center for Appropriate Technologies and FoodCorps Iowa, the Des Moines Farm to School Workshop will be packed full of great resources for Farm to School and school gardens, and even includes some of our very own DMPS teachers and faculty! Let's strengthen our roots and expand our influence in Farm to School in this city.

Master Gardeners Plant Sale- revised information!
The Master Gardener Plant Sale is an excellent time to load up on beautiful plant starts for your school or community garden. You can buy them for full price and be guaranteed your plant selection, or you can go the next weekend for reduced-price or free items!
Victorian Acres Greenhouses (1529 24th Avenue SW, Altoona IA)
  • Saturday, May 2nd, 8am-4pm (full-price fundraising sale)
  • Sunday, May 3rd, 12pm-4pm (full-price fundraising sale)
  • Friday, May 8th5:30-7pm (half-price sale, pending supplies)
  • Saturday, May 9th, 12pm (leftover plants donated to non-profits; first come basis)

We have seeds! 
Thanks to several generous donations, we've got free seed packets at the Central Nutrition Center. Please contact us if you are interested! They will be given away on a first come basis. 
We have the following: 
  • Tomatoes- big and small
  • Peppers- sweet and spicy 
  • Melons- watermelon and cantaloupe
  • Pumpkins and Gourds
  • Peas
  • Beans
  • Onion seed
  • Swiss Chard
  • Kale
  • Okra
  • Broccoli
  • Collards
  • Cabbage
  • Eggplant
  • Herbs- parsley, dill, sorrel, lemon balm, hyssop, basil
  • Greens of all kinds- spinach, mache, lettuce bowl blend, micro greens, rouge d'hiver 
  • Flowers- edible (Nasturtiums, Marigold, Sunflower) and decorative
  • Radish 
  • Turnips
  • Carrots
