Born in the US Midwest some 12-15 years ago under the name of Gravel Grinders, Gravel events are the new hype in the cycling world where riders are looking for new challenges. After the States, other continents have embraced the concept in recent years and the Gravel market is current booming worldwide.
Focussing on both elites but also masters and cyclo tourists these events are a long distance bike race on mainly unpaved roads and paths with an adventurous and often challenging route in the middle of nature. Organizers are often switching to the format to cope with the difficult process of getting approvals to hold Gran Fondos on public.
The Trek UCI Gravel World Series is a series of UCI-sanctioned races held all over the world. Some 15-20 qualifier events will qualify the top 25% in each age group to the UCI Gravel World Championships where the champions are awarded with the coveted UCI rainbow jersey.

Unfortunately due to high winds, super cold temperatures, ice on the course, and potential for Sasquatch sightings we have been forced to cancel the Hot Springs pre-ride.
Stay tuned for a potential new date as we want to have a fun and free pre-ride. . .but we also want the riders to be able to safely ride the course.
This year we are changing the schedule up a little bit. Start off the year with one of our most popular venues, Greenwood! This course features everything from rolling gravel roads to singletrack and features over 75% unpaved roads!
Composed of the finest selections from Round Pond Estate, the Vow is sourced from a narrow strip of gravel that runs through the South East corner of our Rutherford vineyard. This wine is well-structured, expressive, dark and serious. The Vow represents our commitment to past and future generations, to Rutherford and its place in producing outstanding Cabernets.
The soil of our Oakville site lies on a gravelly base overlaid with alluvial soils washed down from the Mayacamas mountain range. The gravelly foundation provides excellent water drainage, while a subtle slope allows excess water to flow into the Napa River; a perfect combination for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This site experiences more maritime influence, with the fog layer lingering later in the morning and arriving earlier in the evening, leading to slightly cooler days and nights. These mild conditions produce wines with an elegant flavor profile and structure.
The train always leaves on time, hence David, Meg, and I left at 5:30pm for the third episode of the Hill Gravel series. This time with a, for me, remote start in West Deerfield at the banks of the Deerfield River. And it paid off, as within 5 minutes we caught up with the locomotives of the cargo train from North Adams to Greenfield. The train was hooting and we were too! Well at least in my memory.
I am frequently in Aachen (where the German event takes place, and literally 15 minutes from the Limburg event) so I am planning to recon ride both courses and give a little appraisal here.
At the Gravel World Champs, plenty of people were on Road bikes with knobby tires because the gravel was so tame. If the gravel is basically hard pack and fire roads, I might do something similar.
But I got back most of the time lost about 10 minutes into the race for doing exactly 400 watts for 10 minutes in the long hilly section chasing every rider I could. I was at my max heart rate on the top of the hill and then I proceeded with chasing a other pack of riders with a other guy. I had 320 watts normalized power for three and half hours, total about 3 500 kJ work. Total 42 minutes at Z5 power or more. Because of the hills it was like riding almost all of the time with my weight at my maximum aerobic power. TSS was 310 according to intervals.icu. FTP was then at about 390 watts at 83-84 kg body weight.
Our INTENSE 951 Gravel bike inspires confidence by using geometry optimized for stability and control. On loose and unpredictable terrain, the longer wheelbase and more relaxed frame geometry improve stability at higher speeds and on steeper ground. Our shorter stem paired with flared handlebars allows for excellent control and handling in all riding conditions.
Focused on you... the 951 Gravel has the ability to be tailored to a rider's specific needs and preferences. Adjustable components like the saddle and handlebar height will help to achieve a comfortable and efficient riding position, while color and aesthetics will inspire confidence and pride in ownership. By balancing these factors, a confidence-inspiring gravel bike has been summoned to help riders explore new terrain and push their limits with confidence and control.
The 951 Gravel bike can do it all, whether you are looking for an urban or backcountry adventure, this bike will take you there. The 951's versatility lets you cover all types of terrain. Stay hydrated with two water bottle cages and another 3-bolt mount on the fork leg that can utilize all sorts of racks, bags, or attachments. The 951 Gravel comes with fender mounts, so you do not have to skip your ride on rainy days.
The pandemic put plans on hold, but the UCI, not to be deterred, hooked up with event organizers Golazo, a European based company known well for big cycling event productions, and other athletic productions, and now have announced that there will be a gravel series contested in 2022 under their auspices.
So, what does this potentially mean? I think it means that the gravel scene has matured, for starters. The money and prestige once exclusively held by road racing is now going to be shared with those who excel at gravel racing. This will spur on even more participation at the highest levels. The industry of event promotions and cycling both stand to gain somewhat from such endeavors. You may not like Pro-level racing and all it entails, but this is what many people want, will pay for, and will support. Many more people will pick up riding because of this. Think about that potential.
Not sure where the change of heart came from but glad to see that you have discovered that gravel is big enough for both the big money events and the local volunteer rescue squad fundraiser. I ride and attend both types of events I enjoy them both for what they are. GTed, welcome to big tent gravel. Glad you are here.

The four 2023 gravel events remain on the calendar thanks to a position switch. For instance, the magnificent Nationaal Park Gravel moves to spring and Pajot Gravel makes the reverse move to autumn. Pajot Gravel serves as the ultimate test for the Gravel World Championship a few weeks later. It is worthwhile knowing that Houffa Gravel again acts as the Belgian UCI qualifier for the World Gravel Championships in Halle/Leuven October 5-6.
The Bolero Gravel Series are organized this year according to a unique, revamped formula. During each event, except for the Houffa Gravel, we offer a large number of timed gravel segments carefully selected for you. The challenge? Full throttle for the fastest time and a good spot in the daily standings!
After the finale, Pajot Gravel Fondo in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, a final classification will be made, and we will know the very first winners of the Bolero Gravel Series. If you want to learn more about the points system and standings, be sure to check out the Bolero Gravel Series regulations.

So with all that said, let's jump right in.
Ever since Jason at the gravel cycle of shared your eventsseries with me, I've been super excited to get you on the phone andlearn more about it. It sounds amazing. But before we get startedas is customary on the podcast, I'd love to just learn a little bitmore about your background and how you got into gravel cycling.
