Thequote above, by Abraham Lincoln, were the closing remarks of his First Inaugural Address. At the time of this speech, March of 1861, seven states have seceded from the United States, and the first shots of the civil war were just over a month away. He saw it was coming, and yet he still made an effort to appeal to his fellow Americans: let us allow the better angels of our nature overcome the worst demons.

I see this often with veterans that I work with. There is a conflict somewhere in their life. It usually happens with other people; their boss, their spouse. The conflict is centered around a particular problem: a situation caused by indifference. Anger. Frustration. Depression. The problem is there, for all to see, set up on a chessboard. The veteran often then takes a defensive position on one side of the problem, and the other individual takes a position on the other side of the problem. The struggle to solve the problem then begins, with both parties taking action to counteract the maneuvering of the other.

Again, I hear you. Easier said than done. The first thing that needs to happen is that we need to be aware that the worst demons of our nature have started to emerge. The second thing that needs to happen is that we need to become aware that we have the capacity to allow the better angels of our nature to emerge. This level of awareness is difficult to achieve in the middle of emotionally charged situations.

One thing I do know, however: those times in my life when I have allowed the better angels of my nature overcome my worst demons, I have been able to solve some really tricky problems. Maybe you can do so as well.

In comes a group of kids of the Hyakuya Orphanage, spearheaded by the main character Hyakuya Yuichiro and Hyakuya Mikaela (called Yu and Mika for short). These children decide they no longer want to be cattle for the vampires and Yu and Mika attempt to escape. They make it a fair bit, only to learn that Ferid Bathory, a vampire progenitor, was waiting for them to think they made it to confront and slaughter them. The only two survivors are Yu, who runs away and makes it to the outside world, and Mika, who sacrifices himself and is assumed dead until it is revealed that another vampire, named Krul Tepes, turned him and saved his life.

From there, Mika joins the ranks of the vampires and becomes privy to the information that many humans have been performing twisted experiments on each other in an attempt to gain the power to defeat the vampires. One of them is Yu. But the series focuses on Yu more, who was rescued by the Moon Demon company shortly after escaping from his vampire city. They take him in, enroll him in school, and start training him to become a soldier. For a good portion of the first season, Yu does not know Mika is alive.

The Moon Demon company is a special task force that uses demon weapons, weapons with unique demons trapped within them, to unlock special powers and skills that help them defeat the Horsemen and vampires.

Fr. Stephen: Yeah, yeah. Well, my original pitch was that you would read newspaper headlines, and then I would explain how that relates to end times prophecy. [Laughter] But you nixed that, and then, yeah. You were more practical and also much more of a professional broadcaster, so without you this would just be the semi-unending ramblings of a crazed nerd.

Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Yahweh,

Your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones,

For who in the skies can be compared to Yahweh;

Who among the sons of God is like Yahweh?

A God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones,

And awesome above all who are around him.

I want to start taking calls, but before we take the first call, actually, I want to answer a question that came in over email. This comes from Brian, who is actually relatively local to me. He sent me an email earlier today, because he heard we were going to be talking about angels and demons and so forth, and he sent this question. He said:

This question kind of refers to I guess any physical geography and the correlation it has to heavenly events and places. But what is it about Mt. Hermon that makes it a recurring physical place for events of such cosmic significance?

Fr. Andrew: Thank you very much for that call, Gareth. Next we have Michael who is in Arkansas, and Michael has a question or a comment about polytheism versus monotheism. Michael, are you there?

So monotheism gets invented, and it basically, this whole taxonomy was invented so we could have this evolutionary view of religion. It was created mostly by 19th century liberal German scholars who, not coincidentally, at the end of their taxonomy, discovered that 19th century German liberal Protestantism was the pinnacle of all human religion. Like it had evolved to them! [Laughter] So they posit: See, polytheism is this sort of primitive thing, and then you kind of outgrow that to monotheism. And they did this whole Hegel thesis-antithesis thing where you have monotheism and you have polytheism, and then the synthesis of that is the Trinity or something.

Her honest look at her struggles with her demons deepened my understanding of mental illness, disordered eating, and family disfunction. It made me ache for her, cheer for her, and profoundly respect her. Whether or not you know someone who struggles with disordered eating, this book is worth reading. However, if you do know someone who struggles, it is a must read.

My parents marry in 1964. As is so often the case in the island state of Tasmania, they meet through mutual friends. My mother is just 20-years-old, beautiful, petite and working at LJ Hooker as a receptionist. She has a fractious and difficult relationship with her parents and is desperately seeking a way to leave behind a world of inconsistent affection, financial struggle and her drunken, adulterous father.

My father is 31-years-old and very close to his identical twin brother and adoring parents in Melbourne. A flautist in the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and professional runner, engaged twice before, passionate about music and sport, tall, dark and handsome.

My father beams with pride as he drives from the Queen Alexander Maternity Hospital to the little cottage on the overgrown block, his delicate wife beside him and newborn daughter in a wicker basket on the back seat of the old Mercury Monterey. In his customary absent-minded manner, he loses his grip, drops the basket and I roll out onto the doorstep of the sunny cottage.

Angels and demons ride the rails and New Jersey Transit conductors and collectors have to collect tickets from them all. And on too many occasions, the rail workers get verbally and physically abused in the process.

As the encounter escalated, the errant passenger called the conductor an obscene name just inches from the rail workers face. The conductor was composed and professional in the face of the abuse while continuing to get passengers on and off the train as we chugged eastward toward Newark. At one point, as we headed toward Linden the conductor radioed for New Jersey Transit Police assistance to remove the ticketless traveler.

At one point, hoping to decompress the situation, I offered to pay his fare. As a half-century plus commuter I have experienced the prolonged delays that can result when a train is held waiting for the NJ Transit Police to arrive and I was already cutting it close. And it is the Christmas Season. In my brief conversation with the candy laden fare evader he told me he was 38 years old, undomiciled and an ex-offender who had done four years in jail in Pennsylvania on a domestic violence case involving his traveling companion.

Alarmingly, this increase in attacks on transit workers tracks a similar trend in hospitals like we saw earlier this month with the slashing of three healthcare workers at a Newark hospital. All three survived the attack but such incidents can cause lifelong trauma on the workers that experience them.

According to the most recent U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Statistics report issued Dec. 19 , close to 5,500 workers died as a result of on-the-job injuries in 2022, the highest number in a decade and a 5.7 percent increase over the previous year. 524 of those workers were murdered while they were on the job, almost a nine percent spike from 2021.

New Jersey Democrats and Gov. Murphy have contributed. We are a sanctuary state. In addition, our lack of criminal prosecutions and lienient bail provisions have contributed to this. Liberal reporters have contributed to this as well.

In our secularized culture, there is a lot of mythology surrounding Satan, angels, demons, and so on. This is nothing new when it comes to movies, books, and TV. Even popular television series like Supernatural, portray these characters in an unbiblical light, and sadly, this is the place that many people get their theology.1
