What is the difference between smart, casual, smart-casual, formal and black tie?
Who the hell knows anymore. I've been invited to weddings with a smart-casual dress code, awards evenings with a formal dress code and parties with black tie instructions.

The short answer here is no. I've attended many events where the dress code has been completely ignored by most and no one has really made a noise about it. I normally dress up, as a rule, to avoid being the guy in shorts when everyone else is wearing their penguin suits.

The only exception to this more relaxed approach to the rules is with a black tie dress code. More often than not, if you wear your denim to a black tie event you won't be allowed in. So be mindful of context.

Context is king when it comes to the event that you are dressing for. The host also plays an imperative part in it. If you are attending a gala event with media and it's well publicised and hyped up, then you should probably stick to the dress code specified.

Unless, of course, you're trying to make a statement by bucking the system. Then go for it and dress that code down or smart it up. Remember: deep down, no one cares what you look like, they mostly care that they look great.

This is the most confusing of all categories. Smart casual could mean smart, it could mean casual, it could mean suit up but dress the suit down. It's a never-ending pit of confusing frustration for men. Let's break it down with some simple rules:

1. Do you know the people at the event well? If so, then feel free to take a more casual than smart approach. Denim, a t-shirt, and a jacket will do nicely. It's time to whip out those brogues if you've got 'em, or a pair of bright and loud sneakers (no exercise shoes, see above).

2. The venue is imperative. Is this event being held at a venue that has a reputation for being smarter or more casual? This can help shed some light on what to wear.

3. The actual event determines a lot. Is this a wedding rehearsal? A birthday? An awards evening? If it's the latter, then you can feel free to dress more smart than casual and have people respond positively.

If you're heading to a birthday and you're the only one in a suit, chances are you'll get jabbed by your buddies. You can feel comfortable wearing denim or chinos with a button down shirt and jacket. If you're wearing a suit then dress it down a bit with a t-shirt.

Don't feel the need to wear a tie for smart-casual. Open-collar is probably the best approach if you're wearing a button-down shirt. If you're wearing a t-shirt you're going to need to dress it up with a jacket of some kind. Using bright and fun accessories to make more of a statement is always a good idea too.

At this point, things begin to simplify somewhat. Formal means no denim, no chinos, and no shorts. Of course, event context still applies. If this is a day wedding and the dress code is formal, then if the weather allows for it, you can wear a shorts suit. But that's your call and will require you to consider the hosts, the venue and the type of event.

Dress codes are not set in stone, there is no right or wrong way to dress up or down, but there are some very simple steps to avoid looking like you just got out of bed, or that you should be on the set of a James Bond movie.

Received a white tie dress code invitation? The undisputed champion of formality, a white tie attire is typically floor-length gowns worn to a night time event. These prestigious events include stately dinners, diplomatic balls and galas like those hosted by Buckingham Palace.
Grand ceremonies and a theatre or opera opening will also include you wearing a white tie dress code. As society's most formal dress code, white tie is more formal than a black tie dress code. White tie is renowned for its stricter requirements and elevated outfits to create a red-carpet ready look.

A business formal dress code is characterized by a suit jacket with matching pants or a skirt. The darker the suit, the more formal. There are seasonal variations as well as matching accessories to personalize your look, but they should not be a distraction in any way.

Black tie attire is slightly less formal than white tie, but it is more formal than business attire. It is the most common formal dress code for events such as weddings, proms, formal dinners, and theatre.

A black-tie optional dress code gives guests a couple of formal options to choose from. Men are requested to wear a tuxedo, but can opt for a dark suit. Women can choose either a formal evening gown, a shorter cocktail dress, or dressy separates.

Below is a simple outline of the most basic information for dress codes by industry. This easy list organized by industry reflects what I would say are the most up-to-date dress codes for roles that are both in-office and client-facing.

What does this mean beyond being able to work in comfort? Here is a list of the most common wardrobe pieces for a business casual dress code, from most formal to least formal. Note that this dress code differs by industry. For example, what is considered business casual in fashion is not the same as business casual for law or biotech.

Dress code: We respectfully inform our guests that the hotel has a smart elegant dress code. For gentlemen, collared shirts and covered shoes. For ladies, smart elegant attire. Slippers are not appropriate in the dining room.

Cruise line dress codes are the subject of countless questions. What exactly is your cruise's casual dress code? And what exactly does your cruise line consider formal enough for your formal night dress code? Few issues create as much confusion among cruisers as what they are allowed to wear onboard, especially the when and where of it all.

From a clean T-shirt and jeans to a jacket and tie, cruise line dress codes run the gamut from hyper casual to elegant (and don't forget Hawaiian shirt night, of course). For example: You may be surprised to learn that high-end Viking Ocean Cruises dress code is closer to Norwegian Cruises' dress code than to Seabourn's. Or that the Royal Caribbean dress code may be enforced differently from ship to ship.

If you're wondering what you should wear on a cruise, especially at night, here's how each major cruise line would like you to dress. Once you've made it onboard, it's important to know that most cruise lines reiterate the dress codes for specific times and venues in each day's newsletter.

Those who technically comply with the dress code but still do not appear sufficiently well-presented may be refused entry and this decision will be entirely at the discretion of our front desk team. We ask that members make their guests aware, and we ask that you ensure the dress code is conveyed to any guests you invite to the club.

Similar to Lounge Suit or Semi-Formal, however Jacket & Tie indicates that it is acceptable for men to wear a sports jacket, suit jacket or even a smart blazer and chinos with a tie. Women should wear a cocktail dress that is shorter than floor-length, a pantsuit, or dressy separates.

You can format the writing of your dress code in a few ways, keeping in mind that the style should be consistent with the rest of your wording. The Dress code can be written with or without a colon or other mark appropriate to your design (for example a bullet or vertical bar). Examples include:
Dress Formal
Dress Code: Formal
Formal Attire (Black Tie Optional)

Number one, I think, is a subtlety of colour. A smart suit is dark and muted, and elegant casual clothes are no different. Navy and grey still predominate - and when other colours come in, they're similarly toned down.

Texture too. A knitted T-shirt is an elegant way to dress casually because its drape and smooth finish make it smarter than a regular tee. A navy knitted T-shirt worn with cream-flannel trousers is extremely elegant, yet feels a world away from a suit and tie.

Alan Flusser expresses this better than I could in Dressing The Man: "The first measuring stick for [smart] attire should be cleanliness. Clients prefer their professionals looking well groomed. Casual dressing is no excuse for looking sloppy, rumpled or unwashed."
