Can you repeat the problem? If so, what are the steps?
I recently updated to the latest version of Shotcut and have notice that any audio my clips have is constantly crackling and popping while being played back. If the clip is played back in windows movies and tv the crackling and popping is not there. when the project is exported the audio also sounds normal in the exported file. here is a video of the issue in question

If the distortion happens in preview, but not in the export, then the problem is that Shotcut is either having trouble seeking in your file, or it is having trouble keeping up with real-time playback so it skips frames.

Is Settings > Player > Realtime turned on? The default is on, and often that is necessary to be on to have continuous audio.
If that is on, please try the different Windows audio API command line options:

The old version had issues with audio output stopped when Windows default output device changes, for example, plugging headphones or bluetooth re-/dis-connect. Fixing this required a library update that had audio quality issues (similar to what you describe) with certain combinations of channels and API. The default API choice is based on what works most reliable in a combination of channel count and output device changes on my systems.

Editing Performance does have nothing to do with the encoding settings.
The editing playback speed is dependent on the formats of the source videos.
VP8 is faster in decoding than VP9 or AV1.
Note that reverse playback for all different with hardware accelerated codecs is very delicate to implement.

ok so I took a break from using shotcut for a while and did some other things and when I cam back the issue was gone. I changed nothing it just started to work properly. Thank you everyone for your help.

I have recorded a few tracks about 10 minutes long, and the guitar track has one electronic pop, in it which I suspect it was caused by the Roland BOSS ME 80 which was connected to Acoustic Electric guitar and connected up to my Steinberg UR44.

I am new to Cubase and have a book called Power Tools for Cubase 7 and have the Cubase Artist versions 7, 7.5 and 8 and have looked online to find out how I use something like a eraser tool and take out unwanted noise.

Thank you all for these good tips, Last night I figured out that perhaps I can draw around the area and mute it out, but now reading these advices, I will back up my project folder and give this a shot.

You could also chop out the pop and then use a timestretch & crossfade to join the sections back together. But ultimately it comes down to whichever option works and sounds natural. Another thing worth trying is to see how it sounds in the mix - you might find you can simply duck the crackle out and in the mix the effect is inaudible, sometimes its amazing what you can get away with.

you might try grabbing just that tiny part of the audio event - ie, you are just grabbing the click/pop, and then do a c&p to another track. Flip the phase on that new track, and the clicks should null themselves out of a track.

When I have mis-hit strings, I usually just found the same note elsewhere, and cut-and-pasted it in RX, which automatically cross-blends the start and end for seamless insert. Sometimes I had to stretch or shrink the note to have it fit.

If you import audio into Audacity that sounds OK in other players, then export it from Audacity as 16-bit WAV at 44100 Hz project rate (see bottom left of the Audacity window), and then play it in iTunes, does it still sound OK?

Typically I use an Apogee Ensemble in the studio and a Duet 2 for playing live. Playback conditions (same file, different devices) are: Ensemble - crackling, Duet - Choppy / Stuttering playing (possibly the same as noted by others?), Built-In Audio - No noticeable problems. Both headphones and line outs were checked in all cases.

Please tell us exactly what device you are recording and playing back with. Almost everyone that complains about various Mac playback problems are using external USB or Firewire devices and the problem goes away when using the built-in audio. Is that the case for you?

Another thing you could do is try is Audacity 2.0.1 ( -macosx-ub-2.0.1.zip ) and Audacity 2.0.2 ( -macosx-ub-2.0.2.zip ). Do either of those versions play (or record) without stutter at 96000 Hz? Most people who complain think that the problem started in 2.0.3 or 2.0.4. If so we need to identify exactly when this problem started.

Gale

Our traditional crackling problems are caused by the computer not going fast enough for live audio. Pieces get dropped during the course of the playback. The D/A converter hits a dead spot in the stream and goes briefly nuts. Some machines stutter as they simply repeat the last known data until something new comes along.

Thanks for the suggestions. The crackling issue is not affected by the load on the machine. The issue is identical if Audacity is the only application running or if (as I just tested) I have Audacity, Logic, Photoshop, Premier, Safari (multiple windows), Firefox (multiple windows), iTunes and Maestro running (going for a serious load test).

Hi Gale
The problem that occurred with 2.05 was with all my projects - I had about 10 stored and all had the same problem - they were all created in 1.3.
I was using my built-in output for playback.
I downloaded version 2.03 and it is working fine now - no problems
I reinstalled version 2.05 from the zip download and it had the same problem as previously reported.
One thing is that I noticed that when I first started version 2.03 and 2.05 after installation that the process was a little different in that version 2.05 went through a list of all the plug-ins on my hard drive and installed them one by one while version 2.03 seemed to load them behind the scenes (so to speak)
thanks

Yes that is correct for VST plug-ins. See Audacity Manual . Audacity no longer loads VST effects automatically on first run because an incompatible plug-in could cause Audacity not to start. With the list you can choose which VST plug-ins to install.

I've downloaded your project file and I found the audio to be more than just sometimes "crackly"... in all honesty, the audio is not of real good quality. It seems that your recording levels are set way too high....

The HTML5 version worked in Chrome, IE, and Firefox. However, no sound could be heard when viewing the course in another Chrome-based browser. I found that one of the browser extensions was causing the issue. in my case it was caused by IDM - Internet Download Manager.

Please check for, and disable any extensions from download managers in both browser and actual download manager program. (IDM only stopped interfering when I deselected the advanced browser integration option within the software itself)

It looks like Rutwin is assisting you here, and I'd agree with his recommendation to test and set your recording level within Windows and try to record first outside of Storyline to see how the recording comes through on it's own and when you import into Storyline, and then check recording within Storyline again. If the audio recordings still sound off outside of Storyline, it might be worth looking into updating your headset drivers. These are usually available on the manufacturer's website.

You are quite right that the levels in Storyline were set to high - I had actually done this on purpose because although it decreased the quality of the audio, it could at least be heard! Agreed, it wasn't the best solution.....

I am having a particularly unusual and similar issue. I have video track on my timelines and then separate audio narration tracks. In preview mode they play together fine. However, when publishing the project, when I then play this in Chrome, the audio does not kick in with the video. It WILL HOWEVER kick in, if i quickly click on another tab in Chrome and then head back immediately into the tab where the scorm is playing. I can replicate that each and every time on several different machines. I have even replaced the narration audio files (.WMA format) with .mp3 and it still displays the issue. This is very very odd and really published should mimic published. A deadline looms. Any ideas?
