Fire worship in Graeco-Roman tradition had two separate forms: fire of the hearth and fire of the forge. Hearth worship was maintained in Rome by the Vestal Virgins, who served the goddess Vesta, protector of the home, who had a sacred flame as the symbol of her presence in the city (cf. Sacred fire of Vesta). The Greek equivalent of the goddess was Hestia, whose worship took place more commonly within the household. The fire of the forge was associated with the Greek god Hephaestus and the Roman equivalent Vulcan. These two seem to have served both as craft-guild patrons and as protectors against accidental fires in cities. Also associated with fire is the titanic god Prometheus, who stole fire for humans from the gods. Fire continues to be a part of many human religions and cultures. For example, it is used in cremation and bonfires; candles are used in various religious ceremonies; eternal flames are used to remind of notable occasions; and the Olympic Flame burns for the duration of the games.

Since the blue flames are only visible at night, you have to begin your journey very early. I had a 1 AM pick up from the hotel in Banyuwangi to the base of the volcano. The drive took roughly an hour, arriving around 2am. The driver stayed at the volcano base parking lot (along with other drivers and tour company buses) and waited until I completed the hike.
Once at the top of the crater, the next step is to hike down into the caldera. It is not marked and can be a rough path, so be carefully where you are stepping. It is important to be safe and go at your own pace. If other hikers are wanting to move faster, kindly stop and let them pass you. This is way better than feeling pressured to walk faster. If you feel uncomfortable going all the way down to the crater, you will be able to see a glimpse of the blue flames from a higher distance.

The walk initially was steep but not too bad, once we got our second wind we were flying as we usually do and even the guide was struggling to keep up! We were keen to get a good pace going so we could be sure to see everything we wanted, including the infamous blue flames before they vanish at 5am!
Luckily we were near the front of the line of head torches making taking the steep trail right into the heart of the smouldering caldera. Looking across the acidic lake later on towards where the flames were burning we could see that this pathway lead harrowingly down the sides of the crater walls and right next to the dangerous lake. The road down consisted of large boulders and rubble roughly made into steps at an almost impossible angle. It was probably a good thing at this point that it was so dark for the hardest part of the Ijen volcano hike.
Finally reaching the bottom of the crater we could see where this active volcano was burning, an intense and bright blue flame licked into the dark night sky in a mesmerising dance. It was an unbelievable sight and in an almost unimaginable location. Here we were, in the centre of a burning active volcano that last erupted back in 1999! The magnitude of it was both terrifying and awe-inspiring.
We are travelling to Java in 3 weeks and would love to see the blueflames with the Ijen tour. We saw that the activity level is currently back at level 1. Do you know if the crater is open during the night for the blueflame tour again?
It needs no sides, but many of us love those saucy Chinese sides like Manchurian or a chili gravy when we eat out. 11. Ensure the flame is still high at this stage. Add 1 tablespoon soya sauce and 1 teaspoon vinegar (optional). You can add more or less to suit your taste. Any other hot sauces you prefer can also be added at this stage. Find some exciting ideas in the variations section below.
13. Toss, mix, stir fry for 2 to 3 mins. Taste test. If needed add more sauce & salt now to suit your taste. Remember the entire cooking process should happen on the highest flame. Otherwise the moisture from the veggies can make the rice mushy.
Al dente rice: Cook rice to al dente on a medium high flame, (NO low flame here). The grains should be firm and yet fully cooked. Do not overcook the rice, it takes only a few seconds for al dente cooked rice to get overcooked and become mushy. So be alert and drain the rice in time.
Firstly fry no more than 2 to 3 servings of rice in one batch. Frying a lot of it at one time will not bring out the flavours. If possible use a large carbon steel or cast iron wok. As soon as you add the veggies to the wok, remember to regulate your stove flame to the highest.
We loved this fried rice!!! It was so fresh tasting and will be my go to recipe whenever we want a restaurant kind fried rice. Excellent tips that really work. The only change I make is to add butter for oil & use jasmine rice. I love the trick of cooking rice in a sauce pan to keep it al dente. Works 100%. Worth when you cook a lot of rice. Absolutely great recipe!

25. Continue to stir and mix when the manchurian gravy is cooking. Simmer till the manchurian sauce thickens and you see a glaze in it. There should be no raw taste of the cornflour in the sauce.
Cooking sauce or gravy takes about 3 to 4 minutes on a medium flame. If the sauce is too thick, then you add some water. If it is too thin, then you can add some cornflour.
