Surewith careful placement and/or a bit of diffusion, the two 300s can be enough.
I'm mostly going to advise lighting the background criss-crossed (right light shines on the left part of the background and vice versa), so that you avoid hot spots and provide a more even illumination.
Once you need to see the floor too or multiple people/two camera angles, you will need to light wider and start thinking about rigging overhead lights. Also, the wider you can light the green screen the further you can pull the subject away from the screen, which will help with green spill and also throw any smudges or dimples on the cyc wall out of focus.
2. 4K vs 1080 for 1080 finish. Generally, I would always want 4K since it should key better as the pixels are smaller and also the noise will be smaller. Plus editors always seem to want to punch-in in post these days, especially with chroma key or flat backgrounds.
Yeah re spill , I would light the screen 1 stop lower or at least make it lower than your subjects .. false color if you have it is handy for checking your GS.. but these days its all a lot easier than it used to be .. they will junk matt around the subject too , so you don't have to worry about a corner of the scree being dark / wrinkled .. the whole screen doesn't have to be evenly lit.. just the area behind your subject .. green spill is a pain with blond hair ,and seeing your in Byron Bay Im sure you will have some blonde models .. ? .. keep the action a decent way in front of the screen and don't over light it , I wouldn't stress too much though , these days you can key off an unlit green bin liner .. make sure the underwear isn't green , or have a blue screen too just in case .. !
Hey guys I only just started here.. I just downloaded the adobe creative suite.. I want to dive straight in and do green screen stuff.. or is it called keying.. in after effects or is it Premiere Pro ?
If you want to do seamless keying where the lighting effects in the background blend with the foreground in a way that is impossible to tell then AE is probably your tool of choice, but a huge amount of planning and many layers are usually required. The right tool and workflow depend entirely on the shot.
The best advice I can give you is to make sure that you make sure any tutorials you watch are being presented by folks that actually know what they are talking about. Most of the newer tutorials I have seen on YouTube for After Effects are presented by amateurs and enthusiasts and they leave out a bunch of critical information and in many cases, promote inefficient and ineffective workflows. For a really good start look at the product page for After Effects and Premiere Pro or just start in the Overview section of this forum and look at the beginner and experienced tutorials. They will get you started.
If you have questions on a specific shot, give us screenshots. If you run into problems with a project select the layers giving you problems, press the U key twice to show us all of the things you have done to the layer, PrintScreen and Paste to the forum and include a detailed workflow description. There are a bunch of experienced users here that can give you pointers if you show them the problems.
I've been doing green screen in iMovie (and it works surprisingly well!), but I'm downloading Adobe Creative Cloud tonight for my new PC. I'd appreciate any "best practice" suggestions for using the After Effects chromakey features, particularly with green-screen (rather than blue).
BTW, I'm trying After Effects because iMovie was having a problem with my actress's blue eyes and blonde hair, both of which became partially transparent. (I think the scene was lit fine, so her hair shouldn't have had green reflecting off of it.)
Assuming the lighting is solid, you should be in good shape. I haven't used the keying features of iMovie, but I can give you a few tips for After Effects. I'll defer to any power users of AE's keying functionality to chime in with more specific advice.
First, you'll probably want to start with the Keylight plugin (from The Foundry). It should come bundled with After Effects Creative Cloud. There are tons of tutorials, guides, etc. for Keylight on the web.
Second, know that you can create masks with After Effects. Not sure if you're already familiar with them, but masks are custom shapes that allow for specific areas of footage to be visible or modified. Masks allow you to create a "junk matte" around your subject, which can be helpful if lighting gets a little uneven or equipment is visible on the edge of the shot. Masks could also allow you to preserve the actor's eyes so that they are not being keyed (especially if the shot is relatively static). For example, you might want to duplicate the main video layer, mask around the actor's eyes, then pull the key on the duplicated background layer.
Third, if you're still having problems with the hair after firing up Keylight, you'll want to look into the "Despill Bias" option. With despill bias, you'll basically select a skin color to reduce the blue / green bleeding. It might take a little trial and error.
Hi, what the h*** is going on with AE 23? Since I have the latest version I have problem with h264 files. All project files converted to newest verision doesn't read h264 format. Only files what I've created in AE 23 are good. What about my all projects created before?! I removed user preferences, uinstalled and installed few times AE and encoder, and the problem is still there. I wasted a lot of time.
If you have a google, you'll see that the issue has been around for years. I've been fine until a few days ago when it just completely made AE unusable on my machine. Yesterday, I had to start a new AE project, import my old project into it and clear cache/restart about 10 times to finish a project. It was a massive PITA. I'm going to try two things mentioned in the video that aren't mentioned elsehwere on other threads:
Thanks, this worked for me with After Effects CC22 running on a RTX 2060. I manually update my graphics card drivers and mine was like 4-6 months old and everything ran fine. Yesterday i decided to update my driver and the problem appeared... - Even when i downloaded the ne Nvidia-Studio Driver it didn't help. So your solution worked for me, but maybe everyone still having problems should install a Nvidia-Driver Version from some months ago. (Maybe make a clean install/delete old drivers first). And i suggest disabling Auto-Update of Nvidia drivers, because the most times i had problems with After-Effects is after installing a new driver version.
So my advice, try a Nvidia-driver that is 3-6 months older and make a clean install (you can choose this while installing the drivers).
Personally, I never update my devices on the first day. Be it my computer OS update, iOS update, Android update, or anything. You have got to be patient with updates and do your due diligence in taking the time to research if an update is worth it or not.
I have been wondering if there is a fix for the green screen glitch when rendering(image 1-4 screenshot sequence 38:22-38:25). I have tried to do the interpret footage fix on the mp4 file but the options are greyed out, not sure why(image 6) and I've also tried adjusting the project settings color to adobe rgb 98(image 7). I even tried to empty the disk cache(95gb) if it would help.
Please stop advising this as it may work once but soon as you go away for a cuppa its back.. the green screen glitch. Atleast give advice t make sure they have put the footage through AME and make sure that is right but honestly some advice on here is shocking.
Hi Rameez,
I have the latest studio driver and have this issue. in fact I have only noticed the issue since the latest driver update.
The workaround where we uncheck import>hardware acceleration has fixed this issue as far as I can tell.
Question Is this on the bug list? Or do we need to log it somewhere?
I'll talk to an After Effects engineer and see if there are any workarounds for you. My guess at this point is that After Effects 2023 updated certain components that might not be compatible with the older driver anymore.
Yes. You can use personal green screen footage created with a green, red, or blue material or painted wall. Ensure the green screen background has no creases or shadows and lots of natural or artificial light to avoid complications.
Yes. All free users can access a limited selection of green screen stock footage and templates, but all users can save in 1080p video resolution. Access all green screen stock and templates by upgrading your account.
I cannot play necro effectively in Raids and Strikes.
I play as reaper, and whenever I am in shroud, I cannot see colours on mechanics as the screen is tinted green and everything is green.
Same with strike missions such as OLC, It is almost impossible to see the difference between blue and green bosses.
Also, I cannot hear audio cues during shroud, making things harder than they should be.
Is there a way to disable those effects?
I've looked and looked and found nothing, someone told me to disable post processing but it doesn't help.
Its not just necro, cata untamed and a bunch more cause the bosses effects to not be seen. we wiped on co cm because of this stuff the huge green neon aoe on the ground no one saw the bosses ability go off. The visual spell clutter is ridiculous in this game
I've been playing with Post-Processing Off for almost a decade (through all content) and never had a problem with it. If anything you'll see mechanics much better because they are not covered by blinding glares, blooms, distracting player outlines, way too bright colours, skill effects - including Shroud's screen tinting, etc. - mechanics/ground AoE's aren't telegraphed through shaders/blooms.
What you cannot get rid off is the Green Screen Border/Outline for Core and Reaper Shroud, which I believe symbolises Shroud/LF protecting Health - as Harbinger (and Scourge obv.) don't have this problem (although, let's be honest, most likely they just forgot to add it to Harbinger, with how last second cobbled together that spec was, and in large parts still is). This is obviously somewhat problematic with many mechanics being telegraphed with screen border effects, but the only solution to that on Necro is playing Harbinger or Scourge I'm afraid.
