Sometimes I find myself really wanting to go to a program with a fancy
name (harvard, hopkins, ect) rather than the place that may truly be
the best fit for me. Am I a name whore and how do I get over it?

I'm a third year in a MD/PhD program, and I'd almost rather stay in my
very rural state than pack up and go somewhere with a big name.

I shouldn't be a name whore as I grew up going to low-tier schools.
Its only recently that i've considered going to a program just based
on the name

My number 1 is currently a non-name school (in fact, it may have an
almost bad name...not horrible, but not respected either). My number 2
is ranked highly and has a fancy, pretty name that everybody seems to
respect. Problem is, I felt more at home at program number 1. Does
going to a big name program really matter?

One of the folks at my home institution said that derm is derm, and
there really isn't a huge difference in terms of where you go if you
just want to do general derm. If you want to do fellowships in
cosmetics or dermatologic surgery, etc. it matters a little more, but
still not a whole lot.

i think this thread may be good to bring up over on sdn -- this is
actually a serious topic that people may be able to answer well with
their collective experience at sdn. could be done as a pm or
something and the mods will post.
