Created by Enlightened Software House, the app promised to "Increase your Android Mobile & Tablets Performance Speeds, Battery and Memory Today." There was a Pro version too, and it only cost a buck - what a deal! Here, check out this gem's full description:

Wrong. Android uses flash memory, and flash memory does not benefit from defragmentation because fragmentation does not slow it down in the first place. In fact just the opposite - defragmentation only makes things worse by decreasing flash memory's lifetime. Don't take my word for it - Google it.


This app (still currently visible on Appbrain - image mirror) and any other defrag app you'll ever see for Android are going to be some sorts of scam in one way or another. In this case, Android Defrag asked for permissions to read browser history and bookmarks as well as network communication. Who knows what it was going to do with this information and where this farmed data would end up? I don't, and neither will you because I reported this app to Google, and Reto Meier himself quickly confirmed that:

I've seen a few apps online, but they don't seem legitimate. From what I've seen, they don't seem to show what's going on while the drive is being defragmented. So I decided I wanna stay away from defragmenters in the Google Play store.


There's no reason to defragment flash media. It serves no purpose, because access to any flash cell is going to take the same amount of time as access to any other flash cell. The reason defragmenting is beneficial to mechanical hard drives is because it makes related data blocks contiguous, so that they can all be read in order as the disk is spinning and minimizing the amount of movement needed from the drive heads. Flash media has none of these moving parts, and therefore does not suffer from the same problems as mechanical drives.


In fact, defragmenting flash media could potentially be detrimental, because it will wear the memory faster while not providing any benefit. Flash memory firmwares will actually fragment data intentionally, in a practice known as wear-leveling, which helps to prevent specific cells from being overused and wearing out more than others.


Flash-based devices generally benefit from TRIMing, but Android 4.3 or higher will do this for you automatically. Apps that claim to perform defragmentation are suspicious at best. Even if they "work", there is no reason to use them.


Defragmenting storage IC memory is not recommended for it may actually break the IC... Just like how SSDs are, you simply do not defragment Storage IC or it may break... also as far as I know Unix systems don't need to defrag since the files are already arranged in such a way that it is faster to access them


Remember that defragmentation of the Android smartphone will not increase speed, organize scattered files or free up space. While PCs need defragmentation to boost their speed, the same does not apply to cell phones.


Do you want to know how to defrag storage on an Android Smartphone? In that case, there are two distinct methods you can try. Firstly, you can opt for the factory reset option. It will completely restore the device to its original state. That means the process will remove all the data available on the device.


Here, you need to understand one fundamental thing. None of these methods will reorganize the scattered files on the drive. Moreover, it will also not increase or clean up space. The only help you will get is the organization of the data by placing small fragments in large groups.


That will make it easy for the device to access different files. Fragmented data is indeed challenging to find and read for the device. As a result, even a simple task like browsing the web can become problematic for the Android smartphone.


Since Android smartphones use flash memory, defragmentation is not needed. And if you use these two methods, there will be minimal impact on the performance and speed. In return, you will boost the efficiency of the device.


For instance, try rebooting the device. Though simple, this is one of the most effective ways to resolve multiple problems simultaneously. All you have to do is hold the power button till you come across a list of options. From there, press the Restart option. It will automatically shut down the system and turn it on after a few seconds.


Another excellent solution is to clean the Android smartphone. The presence of junk or leftover junk from uninstalled apps can slow down the system. It would help if you got rid of apps you no longer use. After that, organize the home screen and customize the system. Remove anything that occupies space and is yet unuseful.


Now, you need to clean the Android smartphone. For that, click on the Settings app. Now, press the Clear Data option. After that, click on All Apps. Here, it would help if you chose Clear Cache and Clear Data options. That will clean the phone.


With over 2 billion devices running Android, it is one of the most used operating systems on the planet. A continuously changing Android architecture meant the OEM changes were getting obsolete causing fragmentation in the Android mobile ecosystem. While the Android app developer ecosystem was insulated from such fragmentation, the Android systems developer was not.


Around 2016, the device distribution dashboard gave a sense of how fragmentation had impacted Android. OEMs had slowed down in releasing updates. Android releases every six months complicated matters as OEMs were unsure which version to target.


Statistics showed most users were stuck on older versions of android and fewer users on newer versions of android releases. The sources of fragmentation had led OEMs to a software upgrade conundrum. Upgrades meant re-design and testing of the software took upto six months, rendering the update redundant as the next android version would be available and competing.


Project Treble tried to address fragmentation by looking at the software stack with an intention to resolve the dependencies. Treble tried to partition the entire system into independent entities.


1. Inter process communication (IPC): Binder is the inter process communication mechanism in android. Treble introduced three types of Binder domains for separating communication and hardening security: apps and framework use the traditional Binder, new vendor Binder domain for vendor components, new hardware Binder for platform and vendor components. All other forms of IPC were disallowed ensuring better security sandboxing.


2. Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) interface & versioning: As the hardware capabilities improved in newer SoCs, the android framework needed a way to understand the changed capabilities down below the HAL. A Hardware Interface Description Language (HIDL) was introduced. (a more stable version of the Android Interface Definition Language replaces HIDL in Android 11)
