Down East Research and Education Network’s Annual CONVERGENCEConference
Hosted by Schoodic Institute, October 7 & 8, 2015

Wednesday, October 7, 9:00am - 4:00pm - The fourth annual Acadia National Park Science Symposium will feature science taking place in and beyond the park boundary, and will highlight science to plan for the future, the theme of this year’s meeting. The symposium will provide a forum to hear about science taking place in the region and to interact and build collaborations with scientists, students, park staff, and others working in a range of fields.
 
Speakers include:
Becky Cole-Will, Chief of Resource Management for Acadia National Park, National Park Service
Sandra De Urioste-Stone, Assistant Professor of Nature-based Tourism, School of Forest Resources, University of Maine
Bill Labich, Regional Conservationist, Highstead

And a panel discussion of our recent climate change scenario planning process and preliminary results.

Thursday, October 8, 9:00am - 4:00pm - DEREN's fifth annualCONVERGENCE Conference will bring together conservation professionals from throughout eastern Maine to discuss the importance of science-based conservation as an effective tool for protecting the region's ecosystems. The theme of this year’s conference is sustainability.  
 
We will focus on scenario planning, an effective, flexible, participatory, and inclusive process.  We will have speakers from the University of Maine; Scenarios, Services, and Society Research Collaboration Network (S3RCN) at the Harvard Forest; Acadia National Park; Forest Society of Maine; Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park; and the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratories.  

At Convergence 2015 you will hear engaging, informative, and inspirational speakers, gain tools and skills to help advance your individual and group’s conservation goals, and participate in working sessions that will advance the Downeast region’s conservation efforts through joint education and research collaboration.  

Please register today!  Scholarship applications available for a short time only.  With your registration fee you will receive entry to all talks and working groups, a delicious lunch on the beautiful Schoodic Institute’s campus, and valuable networking opportunities.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Plan to join DEREN for this important conference dedicated to strengthening and promoting conservation collaborations in Hancock and Washington counties, Maine.  The CONVERGENCE Conference serves as the annual networking meeting of conservation practitioners, educators, researchers, and managers in eastern Maine.

Registration Deadline - If you would like to present a poster or simply attend one or more of the events, please register by TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21. Space is limited and will be awarded on a first come-first served basis, so please register as early as possible. Late registrants will be allowed if space is available but will be charged an additional $50 LATE FEE.

Venue - All events will take place at Schoodic Institute on the Schoodic Education and Research Center campus, located in the Schoodic District of Acadia National Park in Winter Harbor, Maine.
 
Posters - Participants are invited to present posters describing their research at the Acadia Science Symposium. We welcome and encourage posters from a wide range of disciplines, including natural sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities, and request that posters remain on display through Oct. 8 for the Convergence Conference

Poster Guidelines - Our stands can accommodate posters up to 42 inches wide and 60 inches tall. We cannot accommodate audio-visual equipment associated with posters, but presenters are welcome to bring along handouts. We will provide pins for mounting posters at the meeting.
 
Housing - Housing on the campus of the Schoodic Education and Research Center is available for those who want to spend one or more nights, whether you are traveling a long distance or want to spend extra time in one of the most beautiful parts of Acadia National Park. The Schoodic Peninsula has a number of gorgeous trails and some of the darkest night skies on the East Coast. Housing units are apartment-style and include private bedrooms, shared kitchen, and shared bathrooms. 
 
Meals – Lunch is included in the registration fee for each event. If you plan to stay for dinner or overnight and breakfast or would like additional meals or lodging, you will have the option to sign up and pay for additional meals during your registration.
