Ok, so we defeated the young white dragon, with the timely arrival of
the Paladin, played by Ray.

Then we explored the caverns behind the dragon's cave to find that
warring kobold factions had taken the caverns. We were able to put an
end to the fighting and rescue the women and children kobolds.

Upon returning to Fallcrest, after gearing up, we stumbled upon a
wagon train guard who told us a tale of a wagon train attacked by
kobolds.

We found the wagons, and the kobolds who attacked it, dispatched them,
and then found a camp nearby in the woods, with larger than kobold
feet boot prints. Hrm.

Until next time!

Tonight we travelled, via portal, to another town, and while gearing
up for our next adventure, the town was attacked.

A bunch of goblins and their taskmaster literally exploded a hole in
the town wall, and stormed in. We were taken off guard!

After fighting hard for a while, we finally recovered and were able to
defeat all of the goblins except the taskmaster, who ran away.

During the fight, the taskmaster had some of his goblins break a store
window in town, in search of a specific item. We discovered after the
fight that it was a dagger with a handle made of a whale's tusk, that
was taken from a goblin girl, and sold to a merchant in town. The
merchant was glad we prevented the goblins from taking any of his
treasures (which looked like junky old antiques to us) that he gave us
the dagger!

Next time we shall get down to the mystery of it!

Last night we spoke to the wizard who "obtained" the dagger from the
goblins. He gave us directions to the goblin's cave.

We encountered another goblin "hexor" there... together with his
minions, they gave us a very difficult fight. At first, we thought
this hexor was the same one that got away from the town, but on closer
inspection, we discovered that it wasn't.

During the fight, Klyred was just able to prevent himself from falling
into a trap door with four starving dogs in it. Man, that was close!

The goblins had the high ground for most of the fight, and the hexor
was very effective at magically blinding us.

At the end, the hexor tried to run away, but we were able to catch
him.

Also, the DM (David) allowed Matthew to change his character from a
Tiefling into a Halfling.

Until next time!

This week we delved deeper into the cave. For some reason, the rogue
disappeared, but we were able to backtrack and find the fighter who
was covering the rear to come help us.

The first area we came to was a trap, with several dwarven zombies
coming through some portcullis in front of us, while several large
goblins attacked us from the rear. We actually dispatched them fairly
quickly, and were lucky the goblins in the next room didn't come join
the fight.

The next room was very well fortified with another goblin hexor. Aware
of their tactics this time, we were able to put up a better fight! Our
warlord went unconscious several times during the fight, but in the
end we were able to triumph. The hardest part of the fight was getting
into the room! The two goblins blocking the door were able to keep us
out for a very long time.

In the end, we found some treasure, and a very long staircase that led
down, down, down to an ancient crypt.

At the bottom we found a mud and clay painted goblin standing over the
crypt of the Ogre King. We tried to reason with him, but he is mad! He
actually thinks the old dagger we have can raise the Ogre King from
the dead!

We will have to dispatch him, as he plans to exact his revenge on the
townsfolk.

Until next time!

This week the rogue was again notably absent, although we were joined
by the paladin.

It's a good thing, too, or the fight would have been much shorter. We
started off the fight on the wrong foot, and were never quite able to
recover. After a long and bloody battle, our party members ended up
going unconscious one by one.

At the end, only the wizard stood against the goblin. But with no way
to heal, and not wanting to leave his companions behind, the wizard
didn't last long either.

So, we defeated the mud and clay painted goblin... by making him
abandon his cavern. Unfortunately, while we were knocked out, he took
back the totem dagger that he wanted for his resurrection spell. It's
a good thing that the spell was gibberish and will never work.

Oh, well. The good news is that at least he won't bother the townsfolk
any more... and there's no possible way he could resurrect the Ogre
King. Is there? Oh, and he didn't slit our throats because he was too
worried about evacuating the cave with the corpse of the Ogre King.
Apparently we all woke up before he was able to return!

We reported our mixed success to the townsfolk, and were told to
report back to Fallcrest, because the kobold threat that we thought we
eliminated a few weeks ago has cropped up again... the kobolds that we
chased out of the cave have set up camp near the King's Road, and are
hassling travelers between Fallcrest and Winterhaven.

So, back through the portal we went.

We found some kobolds along the King's Road, and eliminated them.
Unfortunately, during the first skirmish, we found a cursed sword...
and the Warlord grabbed it before we'd had a chance to check it out.
It stuck permanently to his hand!

No matter what we tried, we couldn't unstick it. We even went to the
temple, but the priest that could remove the curse was on a
pilgrimage. He should be back within a few weeks.

After the second skirmish, we were able to capture a kobold! Hopefully
we will be able to interrogate him.

Until next time!

We were able to get some information from the kobold, and track down
their wilderness camp. We defeated the kobolds there, easily, and
rescued a woman. She had been captured while searching for her
husband, who had been missing for some time. Her husband's name was
Douven Staul. He left Fallcrest searching for artifacts near a
dragon's burial site.

We escorted her to Winterhaven, where we set up temporary base camp at
Wrafton's Inn.

With her information, and asking about town a bit, we were able to
locate the burial site. When we arrived, we found bandits attempting
to loot the site. They weren't very sophisticated, and had damaged
many of the ancient bones. We dispatched them fairly easily.

After the battle, we recovered Douven, the artifact hunter. We
escorted him to Winterhaven, and back to his wife. They were both very
grateful. As part of the treasure, we found a Nerath Mirror.

While we were in Winterhaven, preparing to leave to examine the keep,
we were stopped by Lord Padraig, and commissioned to locate to
kobold's lair, as they had been causing much trouble for the
townsfolk. We asked him about the death cultists in the area, and he
laughed! No one in town seemed to accept that there might be cult
activity anywhere near their town.

So, we accepted the commission, and Padraig showed us on our map a
general location of where he thought the kobold lair might be. We
headed out immediately.

We located a small wooded stream, that led upriver a short way to a
waterfall. As we approached the waterfall, we were ambushed by 15 or
20 kobolds. They did not give us much trouble, though.

The waterfall did conceal the kobold's lair, as we had guessed, and we
made our way inside. We were immediately attacked by 10 or 12 kobolds
upon entering the cave, but we found out they were simply there to
slow us down for a minute or so until Irontooth and his guards showed
up.

We just about exhausted ourselves battling Irontooth, but we were
victorius!

Upon his person was a scroll, with a message, in Common, no less...
telling Irontooth that "the spy in Winterhaven warned about visitors"
to the area, and that it wouldn't matter, because soon the "rift"
would be open, and the the townsfolk would be "food for Lord Orcus!".

Irontooth had some shiny Dwarven Chain Mail that we gave to our
cleric.

We headed back to town as quickly as possible, but when we got there,
we noticed the outlying farms were deserted, and the townspeople were
very nervous. We asked around a bit, and no one could really say why
they were nervous, only that they felt like something bad was about to
happen. Many of the townsfolk were having bad dreams. One old man
started to fill us in on the history of the Nerath, and the Shadowfell
Keep, but we were too exhausted, and begged that he fill us in after a
good night's sleep.

We need to spend some time tracking down the spy, too!

Until next time!

Sorry these updates are so late!

Several weeks ago...

An old man named Valthroon told us about the keep, and that it was a
remnant of an old empire, named Nerath. He also told us it was built
over the site of a rift to the Shadowfell. This rift apparently
connects to a sanctuary of the demon lord of the undead, Orcus. The
empire had to seal off the rift to prevent undead from coming through,
and then built the keep to supposedly contain the threat.

He also thought that if there were death cultists operating in the
area, they would be interested in only one thing -- re-opening the
rift! Well, the scroll we recovered from Irontooth gave us that much
information, at least.

The last thing he told us about was the reason most of the townsfolk
don't talk about the keep. The rumor is that over 50 years ago, the
commander of the keep went mad and killed every person who lived in
the keep -- including his own kin! He was finally overrun, but the
keep was abandoned soon afterward, and began to turn to ruin.
Allegedly, the commander's ghost roams the halls underneath the ruins.

We never did locate any spy in the village, but there was a quiet elf
hunter who seemed to hang around the tavern a lot, that most of the
other townsfolk avoided. She has now gone missing.

So we headed out to Shadowfell Keep. It wasn't too difficult to find.

Upon entering the keep we came upon a pit trap, right at the first.
Our dragonborn fighter fell in. Actually none of us saw it to warn
him. He was immediately covered with small, hungry rats!

As we were attempting to help him out, we were attacked by what were
obviously goblin guardsmen. We managed to dispatch them fairly easily.

We then made our way to what turned out to be a torture chamber. We
defeated their hobgoblin torturer, even though he attacked with two
burning hot pokers! He was a nasty-looking guy, wearing black leather
armor and a mask. There were several other goblins present as well,
but by this time, we were getting quite good at dealing with goblins.

Off of the torture chamber, there was a jail area. In one of the
cells, we found a goblin prisoner named Splug. He seemed pretty
pathetic, and was obviously not in league with the other goblins. So
far, he's helped us in very minor ways, but he seems to want to help
us carry gear and keep our boots clean.

Splug also showed us where the Goblin Chieftan's room was. We had a
harder time with these guys, mostly because there were so many of
them! The goblin chieftan (Splug called him Balgron) got away before
we could finish off his followers, but we got some pretty good gold
from a chest he left behind when he ran away.

Until next time!

Two weeks ago...

After sleeping uneasily the night in Balgron's chambers, the next
morning we continued exploring the ruins. We came upon an excavation
site, where a few surly goblins were obviously not sure there was any
treasure to be found.

The room was dug down from it's original floor, and apparently had
been worked on for quite some time.

We defeated them fairly easily, and after examining the site, found
nothing more than the goblins had on them, which included a magical
holy symbol to Bahamut.

After that we descended some stairs into what looked like must have
been a natural cave. This cave was extremely hard to traverse, was
very dark and ultimately had some giant rats hiding among the
stalactites. We ended up having to destroy them.

We were fairly lucky that the slime that was also in the room didn't
attack us at the same time the rats were.

We located a secret room in that chamber, that held what looked to be
goblin supplies, although Splug had never before seen the room. We
slept for the night in the secret chamber before moving on.

We then found a chamber off the cave with a pool and a small island.
While we were debating the best way to get to the island without
disturbing the water, we were attacked by what appeared to be a blue
slime creature.

Luckily he didn't put up too much of a fight. We found on the island a
wooden tube with a map and two messages inside.

Until next time!

Last week...

We came upon an area that had a horrible stench, and was littered with
pit traps. Fortunately, we didn't fall in any of them, but one of them
had a six-armed reptile creature. We had heard of them, called
Kruthiks.

We were shortly attacked by their entire lair, it seemed.

These creatures were very difficult to defend against, as they go into
some sort of frenzied rage when attacked. Ultimately, we did defeat
them. They had collected some pretty good treasure, including five
amethyst gems worth a tidy sum.

We then located a very strange area of the keep. This area was simply
several corridors, but on the floors in the corridors were some very
strange runes. Our warlock decided to test one of the runes, and a
blood-curdling scream tore from the rune's location. This frightened
some of our party so much, they turned and ran towards a room that was
shrouded in darkness, and filled with zombies!

Luckily, the effect wore off quickly, and we were able to defeat the
zombies, but our thief was very hurt before we were able to finish the
zombies off.

The runes don't seem to affect or be affected by Splug. They must be
magical wards of some sort. Also, they don't seem to be able to be
activated by the same person twice.

We did set off another one, purposefully, and several of us ended up
gripped in fear again, and moving toward the zombies room again.

Strange. Maybe we should explore that area further, so that we're not
surprised again if we accidentally set off a rune.

Until next time!

Again, it's been a little while since I updated the story, but bear
with me, I'm almost caught up. :-)

We played Nov. 29th...
We located a secret door in the area just beyond the floor with the
runes. When we first opened the room, it appeared to be a small empty
chamber, but upon further inspection, we discovered an illusory wall,
with some zombies hiding behind it.

Once we took care of the zombies, we were presented with a booming
voice that gave us a riddle! We answered the riddle correctly, and one
of the suits of armor turned from junk into a very nice suit of armor.

After we moved on from the area with the runes on the floor, we
located what appeared to be a crypt.

We were attacked by several skeletons that popped out of some
sarcophagi, most of which were fairly easy to dispatch.

We discovered that the sarcophagi would keep generating skeletons
until one of us praised Bahamut at the altar beyond.

We also discovered some peculiar dragon statues made of silver and
platinum. Oddly enough there was one for each of us!

The room beyond the rows of sarcophagi room we found out was Sir
Keegan's tomb. We met and spoke with the skeletal remains of Sir
Keegan. Even though he was beyond redemption himself, we eventually
convinced him that we were here to close the rift, and destroy the
evil that was attempting to re-open it.

We learned that Sir Keegan's responsibility was to keep the rift
sealed, and that he failed in that. He claimed that his dreams were
tainted with Orcus' madness, and that he allowed the influence of the
Shadow Rift to corrupt him.

He went on to tell us of how he awoke one night in a mad rage, and
starting with his wife and children began slaying everyone in the
keep. He told us of how the alarm was finally sounded, and how his
legion came together to destroy him.

Knowing he could not overpower all of them, he told us of how he fled
into the crypts to hide from them, and how, once the madness lifted,
he despaired of his deeds.

He also offered us his sword, Aecris, in the hope that we could use it
to purge the keep of evil.

We found the entrance to the second underground level to the keep, but
we decided to return briefly to Winterhaven and re-stock our
provisions before we delved deeper in.

Until next time!

We played Dec. 6th...
When we returned to Winterhaven, we found the gates closed, with Lord
Padraig and his militia guarding them!

We were told that the town was in peril, as several villagers had
disappeared, and the dead in the cemetery had been seen walking
around. We were asked to deal with the situation.

We entered the cemetery, and were immediately beset by many skeletons,
including two large dog-shaped skeletons.

Also, Ninaran, the quiet elf hunter that used to skulk around the
tavern, was there.

We found a magic circle on the ground, but were unable to disable it
before destroying all of the undead.

Apparently Ninaran was an agent for Kalarel, as we found a note on her
from Kalarel. The note gave her instructions on how to create the
magic circle, which caused the dead to rise, and also gave her the
pass phrase to get into the second level of the keep.

After resting briefly in town, we headed back to the keep.

Upon descending to the second level of the keep, we were challenged by
some hobgoblin soldiers. They asked us for the pass phrase, which we
slyly gave to them.

Unfortunately, the pass phrase was a ruse, as the lead soldier yelled
out "Someone tell Kalarel that Ninaran is slain!" -- Oops! One of the
hobgoblins ran off before we could stop him!

During the fight, a couple of the hobgoblins were trying to open a
cage with a large spider in it. I don't think they ever got the spider
loose.

Either way, we defeated them, and moved into the barracks area.

In the barracks area, we had to defeat several hobgoblins, including a
warcaster, an archer and several soldiers.

After the battle, we discovered many crates and boxes containing
enough food and drink for what looked like months! It was barely
edible... I guess hobgoblins aren't too picky!

We moved on, and found the hobgoblin warchief! He actually told his
grunts not to kill us, as they could sell us to the Bloodreavers...
Bloodreavers?

Despite making some bad choices at the beginning of this battle, we
were victorious. Among the treasure we found a vicious short sword.
I'm sure Nathliea will get some good use out of that! We also found
plans for an attack on Winterhaven, that involved at least twenty
hobgoblins, and several hundred undead!

We decided to camp for the night.

Until next time!

We played Dec. 13th...
We continued exploring, and found an area that the hobgoblins
apparently avoided. They actually posted a sign on the door that said
"Closed".

Wondering what could scare hobgoblins, we decided to investigate.

We were soon attacked by a couple of undead, and a gelatinous cube.
After defeating them, we found a small room which contained the
belongings of Sir Keegan's children. Among the old moldy clothing and
toys was a Safewing Amulet, which we gave to Klyred. This area was a
dead-end, so we had to back track a bit.

Moving on we found a chamber with one gigantic statue of a warrior in
the center, and two large dragon statues in two of the corners.
Attempting to make our way past these statues we discovered that it
was a trap. The giant statue in the center repeatedly swung it's
sword, and the two dragon statues spewed magical energy from their
mouths!

As we were moving past the statues, we were caught in the third trap,
a whirlpool that activated when one of us moved inside it's area. This
was the most difficult trap we had seen so far. There were four cherub
status inside a cage of force that held the whirlpool, but the people
caught inside were being battered to death by the whirlpool. Those of
us outside the cage had to work on destroying or disabling the cherub
statues.

Once we got past the traps, we found a room blanketed in darkness. We
were set upon by many zombies and a ghoul. Also in this room was a
small gargoyle-like creature. He flew off once we started attacking
the zombies.

In a small chamber off this room the ghoul was collecting the personal
belongings of his past meals. We found a Bag of Holding with some gold
inside! This will definitely come in handy. The only other feature of
this room were stairs down to a set of double doors.

Past the double doors, we found what could only be described as a
temple of evil. Across the room on a dais was a priest of Orcus
performing some sort of ritual. Blood poured from the dais, and
drained into a large hole in the floor. Large chains also hung from
the ceiling into the hole.

We were immediately attacked by the priest and his minions. There were
two humans, the priest, and several vampire spawn, in addition to some
sort of gloom enshrouded halfling-sized creature.

The priest warned his minions to not allow us past them, as we would
interrupt Kalarel! He then turned to us, mockingly, and cursed us with
darkness.

It also seemed to us that a couple of times during the battle, the
priest was able to make one of our enemies wounds close up a bit.

Finally we were able to defeat them, and we discovered that there were
no other doors out of the temple, so we decided to climb the chains
down into the hole.

Until next time!

We played Dec. 20th...
Upon descending the chains, we landed in a pool of blood in the center
of a very large chamber. We noticed a large black portal along the
northern wall of the chamber. It seemed to have some sort of creature
beyond it, that was trying to get out!

Kalarel, a fanatic looking human with pale flesh and gaunt cheeks,
clad in scale armor, ordered his minions to attack us!

We moved on him, and he teleported to stand inside of a magic glowing
circle on the floor near the black portal. It seemed as if tendrils of
darkness were constantly emanating from the portal.

The group of us decided that attacking Kalarel was the best way to go,
but about two minutes into the fight (an hour or so of real time) we
decided that as long as his minions were around, he would have certain
protections, as well as continual healing.

Once we figured that out, we were able to concentrate on one minion at
a time; first the wight, then the skeletal warriors, and then finally,
Kalarel himself.

During most of the fight, Kalarel stayed within the magic circle... a
couple of us tried going in to fight him, but tentacles from the
portal kept grabbing at us.

Once we defeated his minions, we were able to surround him, and finish
him off.

At long last, we defeated the evil under the keep, and prevented
Kalarel from opening the rift.

Once we returned to the town, Lord Padraig almost couldn't believe
that we had been successful! The villagers helped us convince him, as
the attacks from the undead had stopped almost immediately after we
left town last time. Lord Padraig ordered the town to prepare us a
feast, and told us that we would be able to rest a time, in town.
