How did ancient astronomers calculate distances between planets?
Public lecture this Thursday 6pm at University of Nottingham

Science Public Lectures

The next lecture: Thursday, August 21st 2014
A Yardstick for our Solar System
Dr Tahir Ahmed
ABSTRACT:
The solar system is our galactic back yard and nothing compared to the size of the Galaxy or the entire observable Universe. But ancient astronomers were able to determine distances between Earth, Moon and Sun, and relative distances to the planets.I will be illustrating how basic naked eye observation and geometry led us to determine the distance to the Moon and the Sun more than 2,000 years ago. I will also talk about how the yardstick of the Astronomical Unit (the distance between the Earth and the Sun) was used to determine the relative distances to our planets.
6-7 pm
No admission charge and no need to book in advance!

Hello - I’m sending this as you’re on our Friends group mailing list of neighbours and users of Bestwood Country Park.

I’m sure most of you also visit and enjoy other green spaces regularly, and we hope that you’ll feel able sign up to the UK Parks Petition.  Our Friends group belongs to the Friends of Greenwood Community Forum, which in turn is a member of the National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces.  This is an umbrella organisation for the UK’s Friends of Parks Forums and the Friends Group movement.  The Federation recently launched the petition.  Here’s an extract from their recent letter:

“Please support the UK Parks Petition

Help prevent the slide into crisis of the UK’s green spaces

90% of the UK population visit parks and green spaces, creating between 2.5 - 4 billion visits annually.  They are an essential resource and service, vital to every community and serving important needs for people of all ages and interests.

However the June 2014 ‘State of UK Public Parks - Renaissance to Risk?’ report by the Heritage Lottery Fund documents the risks to parks caused by underfunding.  It is hoped that this important and timely document will inform and influence decision-making on the future of our green spaces.  We are now at a tipping point.  It is up to all of us to raise our voices together.  Our green spaces need the recognition, protection and resources they deserve, and now is the time for everyone to speak out!

The National Federation is therefore launching a petition, to be a positive public response to the report and to the crisis in parks funding.  It aims to help raise the political profile and make parks an election issue for political parties and for the next Government in 2015.

You can sign it now: http://chn.ge/TXdqhj or by visiting www.natfedparks.org.uk and click on ‘parks petition’.  It’s also available on social media via www.facebook.com/LoveParksWeek and Twitter@LoveParks_Week#LoveParks.  You can also see the petition on www.natfedparks.org.uk - click on ‘parks petition’.

Please add your individual support to this petition, as well as enjoying our parks and green spaces this summer!

If you wish to read the Heritage Lottery Fund report it is here

Best wishes

Gill
