Hi everyone, please consider helping with this fundraiser for two Just Stop Oil protesters.
We received suspended sentences and 250 hours community service each but still face £1,800 each in court costs plus trial expenses. Just Stop Oil won its demand — no new oil and gas licences is now government policy.
Please help us cover the costs if you can 🧡
The criminal proceedings then took place in January 2026. Both represented themselves, with no lawyers. They spoke about why they acted:
"We are already seeing the effects of human-caused climate change — extreme weather destroying homes and taking lives, like the floods in Valencia, Spain; crop failures and rising food prices; conflicts over resources; and mass migration as parts of the world become uninhabitable. And these impacts are only going to get worse and more frequent.
By November 2022, I had taken part in protests with Just Stop Oil and other climate groups, written to my MP, and signed petitions — all to urge the government to stop issuing new fossil fuel licences. All ignored.
I climbed a gantry because each new licence will kill hundreds of thousands of people. Just three projects licensed by the UK — Cambo, Rosebank, and Clair South — could produce 2.1 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
Burning this fuel would release around 900 million tonnes of CO₂, enough to cause roughly 202,976 deaths globally, according to the Mortality Cost of Carbon study.
Keeping this oil in the ground could prevent these deaths. These are just three oil fields. There were hundreds more to be licenced."
They also spoke about how they had tried everything else — voting, writing to politicians, going on marches, making lifestyle changes, donating to charity — and out of desperation took part in one of the most disruptive and most reported protests in British history, alongside the long tradition of nonviolent civil disobedience that has brought about change throughout history.
Together, Just Stop Oil delivered one of the world's most effective climate campaigns.
🛢️ We have kept 4.4 billion barrels of oil in the ground
🚔 That's over 1.3 million barrels per arrest
⛓️ Or 24 million barrels per imprisonment
