I went along to the Membership Open Day and took a tour of the workshop facilities. The attached list is a summary of available machines. In order to book the use of the machines it is necessary to take out a membership and there is a hire charge for use. Usage is purchased up front and workshop staff will log the usage.

The web site has been extended today to add information about workshop facilities and membership.

This page can be used to take out a membership by clicking 'Sign Up Here'.

Attached is a list of opening times for the Silk Mill workshop. The workshop can only open when the museum itself is open and so it has to close by 6pm on weekdays. The workshop is open at weekends on selected Saturdays / Sundays.

Following a tour of the workshop facilities, I spoke to Sarah Smith who is organising the museum membership and workshop access. What is clear is that there is no clear expectation for how the workshop access will develop. The membership will be controlled in the short term to prevent over subscription and feedback will be encouraged to steer the access to membership needs. Sarah recognises that people who work regular hours will struggle to make use of the facilities and expects to extend hours in the fullness of time. Unfortunately, in the short term, hours are controlled by the museum opening times.

The museum will be organising short courses and training events that will make use of workshop facilities. If this proves popular, it may impact on workshop availability to members. Derby Makers could see this as an opportunity to suggest and/or assist with courses. If the current facilities prove inadequate, there may be opportunities for expanding the workshop, potentially away from the museum. Sarah appeared to be quite open to discussion as and when the time is appropriate.

I did ask Steve about the welding PPE situation, but he did not offer any information that was useful.

Cheers

[Sorry I've been out of contact for a while! Living in 2 places at once is keeping me very busy. Hope all is well with everyone.]

Thanks for the feedback on MOM membership. A few questions if I may :
  • Where is the nearest parking these days?
    • In the old DM days, we used to be able to park directly outside the Silk Mill, which was very useful for carrying projects/tools in and out of the building, is that an option now?
  • What changing facilities are there?
  • How much "simple" workshop space is there, ie, just work benches, rather than at specific tools?
    • For me I generally just need somewhere to work that's dry and warm, and where I can use my own tools (Dremel, angle grinder etc) - my alternative workshop is my drive or my garden, neither of which is weather proof!
  • Is there an expectation that (paying) members should contribute a set portion of their time to MOM projects?
    • This was always a bugbear when DM was in the Silk Mill, there was always a pressure to do Silk Mill stuff rather than our own projects
    • I think most of us were happy to contribute from time to time, but not all the time
  • Is there a sense of a maker community being developed?
It's interesting to compare the offering at the MoM relative to Nottingham Hackspace, which I became a member of a few years ago. Certainly in terms of access hours, Nottingham Hackspace wins hands down - 24/7 (once fully opened post-Covid). I do pay more than £5 a month but that's a choice - the NH financial model is "pay what you think your membership is worth" rather than setting a fix membership fee. The maker community aspect to NH has also been very strong, though during Covid that community has been rather fractured, like many groups.

I'd be interested to attend the next open day - just hoping it's not on a weekday, which is tricky even when I'm in Derby, and a complete non-starter when I'm in Bristol! Hoping to visit Bristol Hackspace as well soon.

Best wishes to all
Cheers

Hi Mark - good to hear from you.

Cars can be parked in the assembly rooms for £2.50 a day, see the MOM website for details. There are only 4 blue badge spaces out the front, and no provision for temporary stop to unload. You could park on the roadside though and use the pay & display…Though I doubt the issue has yet arisen. There is no provision for storage of project materials in the museum, nor are any materials for sale.

There are loos, that’s it I think for changing. As to using your own tools, I doubt it’s been thought of yet, when you join as a member, everything is on a booking website and it makes the setup much clearer: simple is cheapest rating for work that doesn’t need the help of a member of staff. Complex is more expensive and includes help (e.h. laser cutter & CNC machine).

There is no onus on members to do anything other than their own work, unless you agree to be part of one of their projects, but the first collaborative type project is yet to happen, I think there’s one sometime in August.

As to a maker community, it’s way too early to see.

People can volunteer their time to help the MOM, but that’s a separate thing, their volunteer scheme.

The museum has just published their first 8 week opening schedule on the members website, they are trying to ensure that time is available for working members not just us retired types, and it’ll develop as time passes.

Oh, and members get discount on the food in any of the Museum cafes.

Tony

Mark,

Hope you are well.

Not much to add to Tony's notes. Steve did say in passing that materials could be loaded / unloaded using the loading bay but that will probably be discouraged, particularly for small items. There is also a car park on Sowter Street (2 minute walk) which I think is cheaper than the on street parking. 2 hours is £2.50.

A work bench and hand tools can be booked at £7 for 1 hour. Sarah did say that bundles can be purchased and called off on an 'as and when' basis, so a 5 hour bundle can be pre paid at £14. A machinery 2 hour bundle is £15 and 5 hours is £32.50.

There is very little provision for textlies and none for food making, art or electronics so I can see that the appeal will be limited to wood / metal workers. There seems to be limited facilities for jewellery making with the forge and crucible. At this point I can't see any means of expanding the facility without extending outside the museum.

The primary difference to the Notts Hackspace is that the Silk Mill is a public facility that has workshop facilities, whereas the hackspace is for the specific benefit of its members. I will almost certainly make use of the CNC router and may well use some of the other machinery. The DM laser cutter will be a more convenient facility to use once we can access the RCMGB. I can see that neither the RCMGB nor the Silk Mill are ideal and there is plenty of scope for improvement.

Rgds

Thanks for your replies. I hadn't realised that there were additional costs per session on top of the membership fee. Suddenly Nottingham Hackspace looks really good value!

I know there's vastly more to the MoM mission that what works for me as a maker looking for workshop space. But I remember that the whole point of the original DM was to get makers into the building, and being visible making things. And these costs look significant, to the extent that might limit access. I would be really interested to see what workshop occupancy is like once this has settled down, and whether that meets the goals the MoM must have set for itself. I guess I need to get down there myself and have a look...

Cheers

Thanks for the info - unfortunately I couldn't make it to the open day so it's
good to see.

From talking to people when the museum opened I was under the impression that
the sewing and embroidery machines, plus a new overlocker, would be available
in the upstairs room where the 3D printers and vac formers are located. They
were doing embroidery in there, and it seems to be broadly equivalent to the
cleanish part of the workshop as it was before.

Al,

You could well be right. I have not been in the upstairs room yet so I
don't know what is in there and what is available for members use. I
have booked on to an induction event later this week so I may be able to
find out more.

Hi All

I had a rummage on their website & found the following listed.

Makers Assemble, Oct 23rd (Maker Faire as was)
Co-lab, Sept 3rd
Intro to Fabric Mono Printing, 14 Aug
Wet Felting, workshop, 6 Aug
Kitchenalia - Woodworking course, 7/8 Aug

I think the 3D printers are/will be in that room, as is the wonderful Canon poster printer.

I know they are running to an 8 week long schedule for members and things will be tweaked/changed so don’t be surprised if it keeps changing all the time. An example is the kiln, it appears the covid rules aren’t helpful and they were still trying to sort things out as of last week.

Tony
