Littleover Swift Conservation

Bill, Ian & Lucy Care and I went along to the Swift walk and talk last
night. We had a talk by Mick Hardwick from
https://derbyshireswiftconservation.org who outlined the plight of the
swift in the uk in terms of availability of flying insects and the lack
of suitable nesting places. It was very interesting to understand how
swifts live and breed. From my perspective I was most interested in
understanding why the nest boxes are designed as they are.

We also went for a walk around the local area and saw a few swifts in
flight as well as hearing some of the calls. We stopped by a housing
development where swifts are known to nest. Mick used a call from a
mobile phone and almost immediately several swifts appeared and entered
their nests. Quite fascinating to see. The caller also seemed to attract
one of the residents who expressed concern about a gathering of the
local hells grannies eyeing up the house! Good job the local PCSO had
joined in!

There were around 25 people on the walk and several expressed an
interest to me in obtaining a box and caller. Mick and Lauren are both
keen to develop local interest and I am sure we can play a part.
