Makers Market Confirmation

All,

I have just filled in and confirmed our place at the makers market on Saturday 5th May 

Setup is from 9am and I have requested 230V mains power but we need to get the gazebo and table.

I have a potential slight dilemma in that on the morning of the makers market I am taking delivery of my new shed. They have told me that they are turning up between 7 and 8am and hopefully they will be able to get on with it and be left to build the shed. It might mean that I have to pop down then back home then back to the pub a little bit. 

Cutting a long story short I would appreciate a couple of people helping setup.

The event is running from 10am until 6pm which is obviously quite a long stint so maybe if we can cover 2 hour shifts that would be great depending on people's availability.

As I am a glutton for punishment I will volunteer for the whole day until 6pm 

I will pay the deposit in the next few days and claim it back from Paul if that's ok ?

This Thursday can we collect a few examples of laser cut items that people have made ? I will bring along some 3D printed items and also it would be great to display something more traditional maybe a homemade costume or knitted item or paper crafting something a bit more crafty. Failing this I could bring my 3D printing pen.

I am committed for that day, sadly but might be able to make it to help set up, although I can’t really promise.  Are you at the Museum on Thursday, if so you can let me have details then.  There are still a few bits we made in the “Makers Cabinet” at the Museum.  They might be useful to display.

Yes, no problem getting a refund.Any paperwork you could let me have will keep the accounts straight.

Grant - that's good news, thank you.

I'm available all day; and I'll plan to be there all day as well (if nothing else, it's too far to get home and come back again!). I'll be there from 9am for set up; already looking forward to 6pm and the first pint!

Can anyone who is available please confirm by replying to this thread, so we can gauge numbers?

Grant -  How much space do we get?

Morgan - How big is the gazebo?

I've serviced the Rope Maker and checked on stocks of string and wool, so we're all good to go there. I was thinking that on this occasion we charge a nominal sum (20p? 50p?) for each piece of rope made; not so much that we need the income (though it'll help!), more because for at least some of the other stall holders these events are how they make their living, and it feels a bit wrong to be giving stuff away for free under those circumstances. Any objections?

I'll need a chunky table to clamp the Rope Maker to, or failing that I'll bring along a Workmate provided we have space.

Also, the business cards have arrived! Does anyone have a QR code reader so we can check that the one that Vistaprint have generated actually works?

One other thought; if we can get our Laser working well enough this week to cut a few test pieces, and bring those along to the Market, that would be excellent.

I should be able to make it all day. I don't see anything wrong with a nominal
fee for rope making. I can check the qr code, either from a photo or a real
card on Thursday.

In terms of space I'm pretty sure judging by how laid back the staff have been so far it will be a case of however big we want it within reason. I think a 50p charge is reasonable for the rope making like you say there are going to be people there selling stuff for a living. 

I'll try and get down the pub tomorrow on the way home from work

The pull-up banner is largely blank except for the DM logo in 1 corner. Previously we've attached pictures to it with small magnets - I've just ordered a batch of magnets from eBay so we retain that option. We just need some good photos to go on there. I will print one or more pictures of our laser cutter; does anyone else have good pictures we can use?

• Al : 9am -3pm (ish)
• Julie : 9am- 5pm (ish)
• Tony/Paul/Gemma/Rob : potential drop-in at different times TBC
• Morgan : ? [Gazebo?]

Please can anyone reply if your plans (whether coming or not) are different to this?

I can't make it, but I do have the 3m x 3m Gazebo and a 6ft table. I was planning to come it last night, but couldn't in the end.

For tomorrow, if you think it appropriate, I've now got a headless Pi 2 together that by default runs an 4 x 8x8 scrolling LED display (currently displays fortunes, the time, who we are, etc - can customise when we're there, mention the rope making, add peoples names if they wish to see their name in lights, and so on.)

The Pi is otherwise running the latest full Raspbian Desktop. If I fire up the hotspot on my mobile, the Pi will connect and then it can then be accessed by ssh (either through my mobile or any of your devices.) I'll have the network/login details with me. So if you guys need a Pi for tomorrow we'll have one available and accessible. I don't have a display, but we probably don't absolutely need one unless something goes horrible.

I've also got a 4-way and an RCD I can bring.

Thanks to everyone who supported the Maker Market on Saturday. While I wouldn't call it a complete success - because attendance was very low early on, and we didn't get any new members even when it got busier - I still think it was a worthwhile thing to do :

• We've shown we can put a good range of activities and exhibits together
• We've shown that we can work well together to run this kind of event
• It forced us to do a number of things (get our Facebook working, print new business cards, etc) which we've been needing to do for a while
• We did a bit of networking, and we've got some new ideas for which events to target (eg, county shows, country shows)
• We made enough money back on the Rope Maker to cover our entry fee
• We had a good day! Though I am sunburned, and I'm sure I'm not the only one (Julie!)  ...

If you have any feedback from the day, good or bad, please post it here; and we can discuss over a pint at the Silk Mill pub this Thursday.

I would agree with the summary. Not sure why the pub was so quiet but I would be happy to support other events in future. 

As I said on Saturday here is the link for the elvaston Castle steam rally which our stand would be really food for and the crowd are a bit more hands on tinkerers

Although you said it wasn't a complete success, you did achieve our primary goal of getting out there. It was important that we renewed our experience, in preparation for future bigger events.
