Keeping you up to date with the Hackspace and its members during lockdown.
Hi MARK

As we enter the third week of lockdown, we hope you are feeling ok and coping with the strange circumstances we find ourselves in.

We’re here to keep you up to date with changes at the space, online projects, and ways to stay in contact throughout this difficult time.

In this week’s newsletter, we have an update on our Personal Protective Equipment project and fundraiser, tales from the #hs-bikeshed, and news about our regular Zoom meetups and workshops!

Hackspace Closure

As you know, the space is currently closed, with access available by request.

This is to ensure that access to the space is fair, and that we can avoid close proximity between members.

Our current guidelines are here, and we will inform you of any changes as they happen: https://wiki.nottinghack.org.uk/wiki/Coronavirus_guidelines

Please only request access to the space if it is essential, and follow the guidelines to stay at home.

If you do need to access the space, please contact trus...@nottinghack.org.uk.

COVID 19 Personal Protective Equipment Project

Since the Lockdown began, Hackspace members have been working tirelessly to produce and supply PPE visors and masks to NHS workers in the city. From an initial contact from Dr M Ghandi at the Nottingham City GP Alliance, we have made and delivered over 700 laser cut and 3D printed masks so far! As well as face shields, the Hackspace is making and supplying cotton face masks too.

NHS Staff wearing PPE

We’ve received fantastic support from
Kitronik who have donated materials, resources and expertise, as well as producing face shields themselves. Mark Goodwin was interviewed by BBC Radio Nottingham last week to talk about his 3D printed visors - you can hear  the interview here.

New requests have come in from all over the county and region and we've been able to help lots of schools get involved too by sharing files and information through a members forum.

We're getting lots of requests from front line healthcare staff for face shields and we can make more as we have the equipment and our members have the expertise, but we're running out of materials and our finances as volunteers are already strained.

Notts Hackers vs. COVID-19

We have created a fundraiser to support our work, so we are able to continue providing PPE wherever needed. Please share this link with your friends and family and help us help the NHS.

https://www.gofundme.com/f/Nottinghack-v-COVID-19

So far, we’ve raised over £4000 with donations from over 100 people!

If you’d like to get involved in the project, visit our Covid-19 wiki page to bring yourself up to speed then come say hello on Slack #covid-19-ppe.

We urgently need members who can sew and have their own sewing machines to help us produce face masks!

If you are able to help, please sign into Slack and join #covid-19-ppe

Old Faithful gives Hackspace 8785 hours of service!

Just before the lockdown Dominic Morrow and Ian Dickinson replaced the original tube in the A0 laser cutter with its replacement (purchased at the same time as the cutter).

The tube had done tremendous service giving approximately 8785 hours of cutting (probably, according to calculations taken from HMS), far longer than the expected 1200-2400 hours usually associated with tubes of its type and age.
As a long serving and faithful servant to the membership, it is proposed to make something of a totem of "old faithful", it'll be mounted on a plinth and there is even talk of giving it an honorary life membership!

We’ll meet again!

Thanks for reading this week’s Lockdown Newsletter, we hope you enjoyed it! Let us know what you’ve been up to, what you’ve been watching or reading, and most importantly, let us know if you need any help. The more we can be here for each other during this difficult time, the more easily we can get through this.

We have created a wiki page with links to support organisations and resources specific to the Coronavirus outbreak and lockdown. We will continue to update it as the situation changes and develops.

If you’d like to submit a story to the newsletter, please use this form to tell us all about it!

Stay safe, and see you soon. x

Thanks for the article. I have offered to help make face masks. Not sure how to interact with correct people
there but have left my email address for someone to point me in the right direction. Hope I can do my little
bit to help.
Cheers
Gwen
