Iwas having the same problem, my Seagate portable harddisk was not getting detected in Ubuntu 18.04, it seems the problem was I was connecting it via USB port 3.0, but when I have connected it with USB port 2.0 of my laptop, it got detected and working fine.

If you see your external hard drive then you know Ubuntu can see it. If it is not showing up then you need to mount it with fstab. Here is some more info on that: mounting external hard drive with fstab

Yes, my new Seagate Backup Plus Slim (2tb) was invisible. With a GParted CD I formatted the Seagate to ext4 and gave it a name and a UUID. My Ubuntu box was using LVM (logical volume management) at the time, and Seagate was still invisible, even after the GParted changes. However, after I had erased my interior HDD and had reinstalled Ubuntu with the standard filesystems, voil, Seagate appeared, and I was able to follow the steps in Giacomo1968's answer. Here's the screenshot.

I've been using a Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive for years to back up my MacBook (Monterey 12.3.1) with Time Machine, but now that I have Monterey (previous Catalina), it's not being recognized (through a Hub connection that does allow recognition of USB thumb drives) even though the light comes on and the disk spins. It's not recognized on Disk Utility either, so there is no reformatting option (don't really want to lose previous Time Machine backups anyway).

The link above discusses downloading the Seagate Toolkit as a fix, but others recommend against it. Meanwhile, I'm trying to get Paragon to upgrade NTSF for Mac since that seems to be the solution I used when I set up the HD in the first place.

Well, I don't actually remember how I got the drive to work in the first place. I have the .dmg file for NTFS for Mac on my computer, but it's possible I didn't actually use that to set it up way back then. Since I only see the .dmg file and not the actual program, I may not have.

I have read about Hub issues, but the Hub works for a USB thumbdrive as I said. If I don't use the Hub, I need to try a USBa to USBc cable? I'm not aware of a cable that directly connects from the MacBook to the external HD input.

BUT! Following P. Philips' advice about Hubs did result in a solution! I bought a Micro B (the kind with both the "little" and "bigger" sides of the Micro B male part) to USB C Thunderbolt connector and it immediately recognized my Seagate HD and starting Time Machine back-up automatically.

Now, I happened to notice that USB thumbdrives were also having trouble being detected and were also ejecting themselves through the Hub. So, I have some USB 3.0 to Thunderbolt connectors on the way and will see if helps that problem.

I have formated the hard drive as NTFS. I can see my movies files on the hard drive with my computer. I have also reset the WD media player. The WD live stream media player will not Recognised my drive. I might have to buy a WD drive so it is compabile with the media player. I have the 1tb seagate external drive and it works perfectly with the media player.

The fact that you formatted a drive (that came out of the box formatted and ready to use) makes me wonder why you did this and if you did the steps correctly. Also, you need to connect the drive to a PC and have Windows scan it for errors as previously mentioned.

I am having the same issue but with a 4tb Seagate Backup Plus. Brand new drive formated with NTFS, only has movie files on it. Brand new WD TV Live HD Streaming Media Player 1080P WDBHG70000NBK with Wifi, and updated to latest firmware.

My roon nucleus stopped recognizing my external seagate hard drive. It worked perfectly for years without any issue. Recently, I noticed that I could not find my music on the disk. The hard drive is not detected anymore. Tried unplugging, replugging, rebooting the nucleus, nothing worked.

Hmm, if the drive is good then I think the Nucleus should normally automatically see it unless the port on the Nucleus has failed.

But not owning one it might be worth looking in settings:storage to see what it says.

Summary: This post states why and how to fix Seagate Backup Plus drive not showing up on Mac and how to use Seagate Backup Plus on Mac. Besides, it tells you how to secure data with iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac.

Seagate Backup Plus drives are great external hard drives for Mac and PC. And they have several options like Ultra Touch, Slim, and Portable. However, many users have reported issues such as Seagate Backup Plus drive not working on Mac, Seagate Backup Plus Slim not detected, or the external hard drive not showing up on Mac.

I use a Seagate 2TB Backup Plus Portable HD as my Time Machine backups drive and it had been working fine. Since I upgrade to Yosemite (maybe coincidental?), I find the Seagate hard drive light on but not detected on Mac. I can see the light on HD so I am sure it is getting power. I searched for all day but no Seagate firmware update available (attempt to update shows it to be current) and no other help available from Seagate "support." Can anybody help me cuz I'm really in need of the files on this drive?

If you also experience Seagate Backup not working on Mac, you can't see files on the external hard drive or access them at all. So, it's important to know why and how to fix when the Seagate Backup Plus drive is not showing up on Mac.

Actually, it's common to see Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive for Mac not working, Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Touch not recognized, or other Mac Seagate external hard drive not showing up. When you find Seagate Backup not working on Mac, it's natural to suspect that one of the hardware used is having an issue. Therefore, it's necessary to check whether the USB port, USB cable, your Mac, and the Seagate Backup drive itself are functioning well before proceeding to a solution. These basic checks should apply to the following issues:

For many Mac users, when they say Seagate Backup Plus drive is not showing up, they mean they can't find it in Finder or on Mac's desktop. That could be nothing more than a setting mistake. In which case you can easily display the Seagate Backup Plus drive on Mac by resetting Finder Preferences.

After setting "External disk" to show up in the Finder or on the desktop, your Seagate Backup Plus drive should appear on Mac. If the "Seagate external hard drive light on but not working on Mac" issue persists, you need to check if the Seagate Backup Plus drive is detected in Disk Utility.

If the Seagate Backup Plus drive is listed in Disk Utility, then you can have relief because it means your drive has no serious hardware problem. And you can follow the solutions below to fix Seagate drives like Seagate Backup Plus Slim not detected on Mac.

Sometimes, you may encounter Seagate Backup Plus Portable drive not showing up on Mac when it's not mounted automatically like it usually does. Accordingly, you need to mount the Seagate Backup Plus drive manually in Disk Utility.

If the above method doesn't work, there are likely file system errors that are making the Seagate external hard drive light on but not working on Mac. You can check and verify the Seagate hard drive using First Aid.

But reformatting will erase all data stored on the Seagate Backup drive. If data stored on the external hard drive are important for you and you don't have any backup, you'd better recover lost data from the unrecognized Seagate Backup Plus drive at first with Mac data recovery software, like iBoysoft Mac Data Recovery.

iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac is the best Mac data recovery software that can recover data from Seagate Backup Plus drive efficiently. If the Seagate external hard drive is unrecognized, formatted, inaccessible, corrupted, unmountable, or unreadable, or the files disappeared from the external hard drive on Mac, it helps retrieve data from the drive.

If the Seagate external hard drive is not recognized in Disk Utility, it's likely caused by hardware problems or physical damages. In this case, you'd better send the drive to a local data recovery service and see if they can help. What's more, you can contact Seagate Backup Plus support team for disk repair and replacement service.

Seagate Backup Plus drives are available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 5TB. And usually, the Seagate drive is formatted with either exFAT, FAT32, or NTFS. That's to say, you can use a Seagate hard drive for different aims. For example, you can use the Seagate Backup Plus drive for Time Machine Backup, or you can simply use it to free up space for Mac internal hard drive.

Or you can manually open Time Machine from your Menu Bar (or from System Preferences), choose Select Backup Disk, and then select Seagate hard Drive for Backup. If you want to eject Seagate Backup from Mac computers, right-click its icon in Finder and select Eject.

Many Seagate drives have an exclusive program called Seagate Toolkit that enables you to sync important files put into the Mirror folder on your Mac and the drive. It's convenient if you want some documents to be always available on your Seagate external hard drive.

However, it doesn't prevent data loss caused by accidental deletion as Toolkit automatically updates the files in the Mirror folder whenever you add, edit or delete something on your Mac or from your drive.
