Hi all,
This Wednesday, from 6:30-8 in Student Center 315, our meeting will be based around representations of atheism in the media, and the image that television, movies, etc. give to nonbelievers. You might imagine they're mostly negative, but you might be surprised; it promises to be a very interesting discussion.
The following day, there will be events all day long in support of Take Back the Night, the annual demonstration against sexual and institutionalized violence; make sure to stop by the SAC Pit during the day to check out the Clothesline Project, then at 4 PM make sure to assemble at the statue of Father Egan for the rally and protest march; at the rally, local community organizers will share their work and their resources with the DePaul community. Following this, there will be a keynote address by Owen Daniel-McCarter (a collective member of the Transformative Justice Law Project of Illinois and professor of sociology at DePaul) about alternative methods of community accountability for sexual assault without using the violent criminal legal system and/or the police and/or prisons and resilience and resistance to state based violence and transformative justice. We are also going to be sharing in peace circles led by Ann Russo (professor in the Women's and Gender Studies department and founding member of Building Communities, Ending Violence) to support healing and to share our experiences.
I very much hope to see many of you at both our meeting and Take Back the Night. It's a big 'ol week, y'all.
