This is from my friend and colleague (Barrie Jean Borich) from the second Op-Ed Project cohort. She asked that I send it to you.
It sounds very cool!

Hello OpEd Colleagues:
Forgive me for not responding to any group mail in the last few
months, but the reason is I've dropped everything (aside from
teaching/tenure deadlines) to get my magazine project off the ground.
Read down for the email I just sent to my department--and
please know I am VERY interested in publishing first-person work by
scholars working on city-based themes. What I'm looking for is rather
like the OpEd, but with more voice and ruminative uncertainty. I want
essays, short-or-long, that are exploring questions,
across disciplines, rather than making yes/no arguments. Please drop me
a note if you want to chat about an idea!
I hope you are all well! xo bjb

Dear Colleagues. I write to invite you into the
Slag Glass City. We launched
on Friday, and we have most of the kinks worked out. So far the response has been splendid. Please visit and take a walk around!
or
[Both addresses go to the same place.]
Creative Writing Folks (including any of you who do creative
work)--do let me know if you have nonfiction literary prose, first
person city-themed scholarship, or hybrid work that you think would be a
good fit for the journal.
(We are national--all cities, not just Chicago--and as we are web-based we will publish continuously.)
And
EVERYONE, PLEASE encourage your artist and writer
friends to submit urban-focused prose and/or visual-media work. The
guidelines are on the site. We have so much room to grow right now, so
really, I'm open to considering just about anything
of quality, as long as it links to the journal mission. [Current
students cannot submit, but alums are welcome.]
If you are a social media person [and if you are not, please
ignore] do spread word, if you feel so moved. However, one heads up--the
site is linking better on Facebook if done from one of the individual
essays rather than from the home page. This is a
tech problem that is on my non-emergency list of things to fix, but for
now the home page links without a picture, but individual essays post
WITH images. You'll see that images are key in the
Slag Glass City, so spreading word via the SHARE buttons on individual essay pages is at this point better.
Thanks Everyone,and Happy December.
best, bjb
