Just received a press release from the MLA about the Scarborough Prize for outstanding scholarly study of black American literature or culture and Francesca received an honorable mention for her book “Sounding Like a No-No: Queer Sounds and Eccentric Acts in the Post-Soul Era.”
The press release is a PDF at http://www.mla.org/awards_winners.
Here’s what it says was the committee’s citation for the honorable mention:
“In ‘Sounding like a No-No: Queer Sounds and Eccentric Acts in the Post-Soul Era,’ Francesca T. Royster offers invaluable black queer modes of reading, seeing, and listening to the eccentricities of black popular music since the 1970s that deftly circumnavigate different genres and methodological approaches. Discussing neglected figures such as Grace Jones, Eartha Kitt, and Meshell Ndegeocello, who rarely receive the critical attention they deserve, while also illuminating the idiosyncrasies of canonical performers like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, Royster argues that their eccentricity results from a queered relationship between music and embodiment as it traverses the black performative body. Historiographically rich and theoretically incisive, Royster’s study represents a major addition to the study of contemporary black literature and culture.”
Congratulations Francesca!
