Patches are software and operating system (OS) updates that address security vulnerabilities within a program or product. Software vendors may choose to release updates to fix performance bugs, as well as to provide enhanced security features.
When software updates become available, vendors usually put them on their websites for users to download. Install updates as soon as possible to protect your computer, phone, or other digital device against attackers who would take advantage of system vulnerabilities. Attackers may target vulnerabilities for months or even years after updates are available.
Some software will automatically check for updates, and many vendors offer users the option to receive updates automatically. If automatic options are available, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends that you take advantage of them. If they are not available, periodically check your vendor's websites for updates.
If possible, only apply automatic updates from trusted network locations (e.g., home, work). Avoid updating software (automatically or manually) while connected to untrusted networks (e.g., airport, hotel, coffee shop). If updates must be installed over an untrusted network, use a Virtual Private Network connection to a trusted network and apply updates.
Sometimes vendors will discontinue support for a software program or issue software updates for it (also known as end-of-life [EOL] software). Continued use of EOL software poses consequential risk to your system that can allow an attacker to exploit security vulnerabilities. The use of unsupported software can also cause software compatibility issues as well as decreased system performance and productivity.
New vulnerabilities are continually emerging, but the best defense against attackers exploiting patched vulnerabilities is simple: keep your software up to date. This is the most effective measure you can take to protect your computer, phone, and other digital devices.
When vendors become aware of vulnerabilities in their products, they often issue patches to fix those vulnerabilities. Make sure to apply relevant patches to your computer as soon as possible so that your system is protected.

Hi everyone. We are running a 10.8.1 Portal with a federated instance of ArcServer associated with it. I want to install a number of patches needed for both and was wondering if there was a best practice order for applying those patches? Do I do portal first and then server, or server than portal, or does it matter?
Yes, there are best practices for patching and I was provided these by Esri Technical Support. In short, the order doesn't matter. But I always start with Portal as it will take the longest (guidance from Esri and now my experience).
1) Access 'Services' menu in Windows and stop the different services for the software components of your ArcGIS Enterprise. I.e. Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Data Store, & ArcGIS Server - If you are in a multi-tier deployment you will need to stop each service on each VM. Stopping the services prior to running the patches is not necessary, but will ensure they install faster.
2) Open 'Check for ArcGIS Enterprise Patches' --> Start with Portal (it will take the longest) --> run the recommended patches by selecting 'Install All Patches' this will open a menu of all the patches with checkboxes and you can select which patches to install.
5) Run systems checks on ArcGIS Enterprise. I usually test that I can launch apps with both (hosted) layers and layers referencing registered datastores. Additionally, I will check that I can publish to ArcGIS Enterprise. --Note: Portal can take up to 10 mins to spin back up. Be patient.
I have always thought that patching your passive/stand-by instance, then rebooting and let it stabilize, then patching the active node so it will become the stand-by was the best answer; but it would be great to see definitive guidance from the ESRI staff for it.
Nature patches bring nature to neighborhood parks. Nature patches are spaces within existing parks that are enhanced with beautiful natural elements for people and wildlife. A variety of natural materials like native Pacific Northwest plants, logs, boulders, paths, and learning elements are added to underused areas to encourage people to play and explore. Nesting boxes, flowering plants, and other additions improve the habitat for birds, pollinating insects, and wildlife. Community members are welcome to help with planting and stewardship activities.
Nature patches are part of the larger Ecologically Sustainable Landscapes Initiative. The nature patch program focuses on improving the natural and ecological functions of park spaces while expanding local access to nature for all Portlanders. The goals of the program include:
The locations chosen to become nature patches are underused areas of developed parks that are not programmed, are challenging to maintain, or are better suited to natural uses. Portland Parks & Recreation will be improving additional parks with nature patches across the city, with a focus on neighborhoods with less access to greenspaces. The size of nature patches varies with each park, depending on the current uses and open space available. In general, the larger the area, the better it can function to support wildlife. In practice, nature patches range from about an acre to smaller pockets of nature tucked into the existing park landscapes.
The City of Portland ensures meaningful access to City programs, services, and activities to comply with Civil Rights Title VI and ADA Title II laws and reasonably provides: translation, interpretation, modifications, accommodations, alternative formats, auxiliary aids and services. The embroidery percentage refers to how much of the patch is taken up by your design. If you have a few words and a blank background, you would have a lower percentage. Whereas, if your design was more detailed and took up more of the space, you would have a higher percentage.
