In alchemy and philosophy, prima materia, materia prima or first matter (for a philosophical exposition refer to: Prime Matter), is the ubiquitous starting material required for the alchemical magnum opus and the creation of the philosopher's stone. It is the primitive formless base of all matter similar to chaos, the quintessence or aether. Esoteric alchemists describe the prima materia using simile, and compare it to concepts like the anima mundi.

The concept of prima materia is sometimes attributed to Aristotle.[2] The earliest roots of the idea can be found in the philosophy of Anaxagoras, who described the nous in relation to chaos. Empedocles' cosmogony is also relevant.[3]

When alchemy developed in Greco-Roman Egypt on the foundations of Greek philosophy, it included the concept of prima materia as a central tenet. Mary Anne Atwood uses words attributed to Arnaldus de Villa Nova to describe the role of prima materia in the fundamental theory of alchemy: "That there abides in nature a certain pure matter, which, being discovered and brought by art to perfection, converts to itself proportionally all imperfect bodies that it touches."[4] Although descriptions of the prima materia have changed throughout history, the concept has remained central to alchemical thought.

Alchemical authors used similes to describe the universal nature of the prima materia. Arthur Edward Waite states that all alchemical writers concealed its "true name". Since the prima materia has all the qualities and properties of elementary things, the names of all kinds of things were assigned to it.[5] A similar account can be found in the Theatrum Chemicum:

They have compared the "prima materia" to everything, to male and female, to the hermaphroditic monster, to heaven and earth, to body and spirit, chaos, microcosm, and the confused mass; it contains in itself all colors and potentially all metals; there is nothing more wonderful in the world, for it begets itself, conceives itself, and gives birth to itself.[6]

Comparisons have been made to Hyle, the primal fire, Proteus, Light, and Mercury.[7] Martin Ruland the Younger lists more than fifty synonyms for the prima materia in his 1612 alchemical dictionary. His text includes justifications for the names and comparisons. He repeats that, "the philosophers have so greatly admired the Creature of God which is called the Primal Matter, especially concerning its efficacy and mystery, that they have given to it many names, and almost every possible description, for they have not known how to sufficiently praise it."[8] Waite lists an additional eighty four names.

Typically, issues with crema or the flavor of the shot do not indicate a malfunction of the machine. Instead, this indicates that an adjustment needs to be made in the brewing process or that different beans need to be used.

The type of bean that is being used is particularly important for super-automatic machines, because the built in burr grinders only accept certain types of beans. Another consideration is the roast of the bean, which greatly influences how much crema can be produced, as well as the flavor of the shot. Super-automatic machines are not compatible with oily, caramelized, or flavored beans. Properly stored and recently roasted beans are best. You can find more information on why bean selection and storage is important for super-automatic machines by watching the video below.

If you are not able to get water to flow through the machine at all, or if the machine displays an E05 code, then something is blocking water flow through the machine. This issue typically indicates the machine is not being cleaned on a regular basis. Review the cleaning & maintenance rundown for this machine, and make sure maintenance is done at least as often as is suggested with the recommended product. Once flow is restored, even if it is minimal flow, a descaling should be done immediately.

Once the flow issue has been resolved the machine should be immediately descaled with the recommended product and a carafe cleaning cycle should be run. Flow issues and blockages are typically due to lack of maintenance or excessive scale buildup. Also refer to the section of this article which discusses milk carafe issues before proceeding.

In some situations, you will be able to get flow through the machine for all functions, but the machine thinks there is no water flowing through. There is a device in the machine called a flow meter, and it tells the machine when water is flowing through or not. The device operates by having small fan-like blades spin when water passes through it. If those blades get stuck from excessive scale buildup or debris, then they will not spin. As a result, even though water is flowing through the machine, you will get a flow error.

If your machine uses a water filter, temporarily remove it from the water tank and add the recommended descaling product to the water tank. The descaler needs to work its way into the system to start dissolving the scale buildup in the flow meter. You may have to keep restarting the machine so that it can keep attempting to prime, which will draw the descaler/water solution into the system. If at any point you are able to clear the flow message then you will want to do an immediate descale of the machine. After you have descaled, run 4-5 tanks of plain water through the hot water function for the wand in order to ensure the system is completely free of debris.

If you have a leak coming from the front spout, it can overflow and come out down the front panel of the machine. The spout can be removed by pulling down on it firmly. You can wash the spout separately, and clear out any coffee, or grinds that may have built up on the holes to the spout.

If you hear a squeaking sound while brewing or rinsing, your brew unit o-ring likely needs to be lubricated. In some cases, your brew unit o-ring may need to be replaced. You can use Gaggia Food-Safe Lubricant or petroleum gel, such as Vaseline to lubricate the o-ring. Only a little bit of lubricant is needed.

The brew unit brews, as the name suggests, but, just as importantly, it's also responsible for tamping ground coffee into a consistent puck. Inside the unit are two tracks which should be lubricated every six months or so for best results in the cup. Watch the video on the right to get the low down on food safe lubricant and how to keep the brew unit functioning smoothly.

If your machine is making squeaking sounds, it's also possible that the rubber plug inside your boiler spout is making a squeaking sound as it moves back and forth. This is easy to resolve by following the instructions on the right.

All three of these issues share the same root cause. The grinder has become jammed with grounds or coffee residues. These issues are typically a result of incorrect beans being used in the machine. This machine is not compatible with oily, dark roasted, caramelized, or flavored beans. Use of these beans can cause permanent damage to the machine that is not covered under warranty. These beans can be identified easily. They will be shiny and feel slippery or sticky. Dry beans that are appropriate for the machine will look dull and feel rough. This machine does not have a user serviceable grinder so it is very important that the correct beans are used. Follow these steps to fix the behavior:

In the video on the right, Todd shows you how to clear a clogged grinder on the Gaggia Anima. If after following the instructions in this video, the issue is not resolved, your machine should be serviced and you should contact our technical support team.

The machine is sensing that the brew unit motor is working too hard to engage the brew unit. This is a fail-safe built into the machine to prevent itself from damaging the brew unit; the machine will stop working and display an error. This issue is typically resolved through normal maintenance.

If your machine is displaying the error that the bean hopper lid is open, even though the bean hopper lid is closed, the magnet for the hopper lid likely went missing. When the hopper lid is closed, the magnet makes a connection with the sensor on the machine, telling the machine that the lid is closed.
If your magnet is missing, we have replacements readily available, but you can also use a small round magnet from a hardware or arts and crafts store. In order to be able to adjust the grinder while it's running, as described in the user manual, we recommend gluing the magnet in the socket shown in the photo on the right.

While the basic idea of hylomorphism is easy to grasp, much remainsunclear beneath the surface. Aristotle introduces matter and form, inthe Physics, to account for changes in the natural world, where he is particularly interested in explaining how substances comeinto existence even though, as he maintains, there is no generationex nihilo, that is that nothing comes from nothing. In thisconnection, he develops a general hylomorphic framework, which he thenextends by putting it to work in a variety of contexts. For example,he deploys it in his Metaphysics, where he argues that formis what unifies some matter into a single object, the compound of thetwo; he appeals to it in his De Anima, by treating soul andbody as a special case of form and matter and by analyzing perceptionas the reception of form without matter; and he suggests in thePolitics that a constitution is the form of a polisand the citizens its matter, partly on the grounds that theconstitution serves to unify the body politic.

Although Aristotle is clearly criticizing Plato here, it may be thathis point is simply that Plato was not sufficiently clear that primematter is never to be found existing apart from the elements, and thathe did not give good enough reasons for its introduction, not that hewas wrong to believe in it.

It seems that those who are committed to there being something whichaccounts for the numerical distinctness of individuals must say thatthere is nothing that accounts for the numerical distinctness of thedistinctness-makers. The only alternative would be to introduce somefurther thing to account for their distinctness, andso on; but this results in an infinite regress, which, as well asbeing ontologically bloated, appears to be vicious, since we can nevergrasp the full account of what makes Socrates and Callias distinct. Both sides agree that explanation must stop somewhere, but they differover where it is appropriate to stop: is it a basic, inexplicable factthat Socrates is numerically distinct from Callias, or that theirmatter is distinct? (See Markosian 2008, 8, for a contemporarydiscussion of this question.) At any rate, even if it is difficult toprove that there is an important metaphysical question here, thetraditional interpretation of Aristotle is that he thinks thereis.
