Phaladeepika in Tamil PDF: A Classic Text on Vedic Astrology

Phaladeepika is one of the most important texts on Vedic astrology, written by Mantreshwara, a 13th-century astrologer from Tamil Nadu. The word Phaladeepika means "a lamp of results", and the book covers various topics such as planetary significations, house significations, yogas, dasas, transits, vargas, and more. The book is divided into 28 chapters and contains 865 verses.

Phaladeepika is considered as one of the best sources of learning Vedic astrology, as it is concise, clear, and comprehensive. It is based on the teachings of earlier authorities such as Parashara, Jaimini, Varahamihira, and Yavana. It also incorporates some original contributions by Mantreshwara, such as the concept of shadbala (six-fold planetary strength), the use of special ascendants (such as hora lagna and ghati lagna), and the delineation of various yogas.

Phaladeepika has been translated into many languages, including English, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Tamil. The Tamil translation was done by V. Subrahmanya Sastri, a scholar and astrologer who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. He also translated other classics such as Brihat Jataka, Saravali, and Prashna Marga. His translation of Phaladeepika is available online as a PDF file for free download.

Shadbala: The Six-fold Strength of Planets

Shadbala is a concept from Vedic astrology that helps us understand the total strength of a planet in our chart. Shadbala can be literally split into two words, i.e. Shad and Bala. Shad means six and Bala means strength. So, Shadbala actually means six-fold or six-part strength of planets.

Why do we need to know the strength of planets? Because the effects of a planet, whether auspicious or inauspicious, will be in proportion to its strength. A weak planet may not be able to give its full results, while a strong planet may have more impact on our life. Therefore, Shadbala is an important tool for assessing the quality and quantity of planetary influences.

How do we calculate Shadbala? There are six main criteria for assessing a planet's strength, namely: Sthanabala, Digbala, Kalabala, Chestabala, Naisargikabala, and Drikbala. Each of these criteria has sub-components and formulas that are used to assign points or Shashtiamsas to each planet. The total points or Shashtiamsas of a planet are its Shadbala.

Sthanabala: Positional Strength

Sthanabala is the positional strength of a planet based on its placement in a sign, house, drekkana, and varga. The five components of Sthanabala are Uchabala, Saptavargaja Bala, Ojayugma Bala, Kendradi Bala, and Drekkana Bala.

    • Uchabala or exaltation strength is given to the planet based on its position with relation to the exaltation point of that planet. For example, the Moon is exalted at 3 degrees Taurus and debilitated at 3 degrees Scorpio. When the Moon occupies its exact degree of exaltation, it gets 60 Shashtiamsas. When it occupies its exact degree of debilitation, it gets 0 Shashtiamsas. When it occupies a position somewhere in between these points, it gets proportionate points.
    • Saptavargaja Bala or seven-divisional chart strength is the calculation based on the planet's position in seven varga charts, namely: Rasi, Hora, Drekkana, Saptamsa, Navamsa, Dwadasamsa, and Trimsamsa. Each varga chart has a different weightage for each planet. For example, Rasi chart has 6 units for all planets, Hora chart has 2 units for Sun and Moon and 1 unit for other planets, Drekkana chart has 4 units for Mars and 2 units for other planets, and so on.
    • Ojayugma Bala or odd-even strength is based on whether the planet is in an odd or even sign or navamsa. Male planets (Sun, Mars, Jupiter) get full strength in odd signs and navamsas. Female planets (Moon, Venus) get full strength in even signs and navamsas. Mercury gets full strength in both odd and even signs and navamsas. Saturn gets half strength in both odd and even signs and navamsas.
    • Kendradi Bala or angular strength is based on whether the planet is in one of the kendra houses (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th). Kendra houses are considered as strong houses that give more power to the planets. A planet gets full strength in a kendra house (60 Shashtiamsas), three-fourth strength in a panapara house (2nd, 5th, 8th or 11th), half strength in an apoklima house (3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th), and no strength in a sandhi (junction) point (0 degree or 30 degree of any sign).
    • Drekkana Bala or decanate strength is based on whether the planet is in a favorable drekkana (decan) of a sign. A sign is divided into three drekkanas of 10 degrees each. The first drekkana of each sign is good for male planets (Sun, Mars, Jupiter 51082c0ec5
