Grow a Garden in 2018

Roughly 1 in 10 Coloradans struggle with hunger, facing times when there is not enough money to buy food. DUG's Grow a Garden ensures that in-need individuals, families and groups have access to the necessary seeds, seedlings and education to grow a thriving vegetable garden thereby improving local food security for program participants.

We are proud to present the results of 2018's Grow a Garden program:

  • Grow a Garden served 1,297 individuals and 131 groups across six counties14 partner organizations were also engaged with the program.
  • Over 130 participants were reached with a targeted workshop on the Basics of Organic Gardening.
  • Over one third of participants would not have grown a vegetable garden without the program.
  • 78% of Grow a Garden participants felt more able to provide food for themselves and their families.
  • 90% of participants stated the Grow a Garden program reduced their grocery bills.
  • It costs DUG $40 to provide seeds, seedlings and know-how to each individual applicant, and $60 for groups.
"This program made it possible for my family to grow a garden this year, we would not have otherwise. I am so grateful for the ability not only to eat more fresh food, but also to have a place to relax and garden when things are stressful."

"I am a senior and full-time care giver for my disabled veteran husband. He is a 3.5 year survivor, post double-bi-lateral lung transplant patient. I have always worked in the field of Nutrition and Wellness, so this program is invaluable to us. Thank You, D.U.G.!"
