My favorite gaming convention, the WBC (World Boardgaming Championships) , has opened the registration and hotel reservations, and this is a pitch to encourage you to try it.
The convention runs from July 25- Aug 2. The registration to the convention for all 9 days is only $120 (through the end of the month). The block rate for the hotel rooms is $149/night. The convention is held in a ski resort in rural Pennslyvania about 2 hours from Pittsburgh.
If you like gaming conventions, I would encourage you to give it a try. Even though there are open gaming, the focus of the convention is tournaments. The tournaments format just means that they'll be people playing that game at that time. You don't need to work to set up a game. Yes, there are people trying to win the tournament, but most people are very friendly. I have made a lot of friends there because of the tournaments. I keep bumping into the same people here and there and after chatting with them a friendship forms. If you are competitive, you can try to get into as many semifinals and finals as you can.
The web site is
boardgamers.org. The web site is a bit archaic and is undergoing a refresh. It is a non-profit organization, so you have to sign up as a member which gets you admission to the WBC.
If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Let me know if you decide to go, I can help you with registration and hints about the logistics.
