We started testing the XMPP server again, after I saw the changes listed
for 5.3.7. We need to be able to set custom status messages in an XMPP
client and have other users see them in their clients. I'm referring to
the additional free form messages that can follow the available, busy
and offline statuses. Examples include "Available - Ames office",
"Available - Des Moines office", "Busy - on site visit", etc.

We've tested Pandion and Psi for Windows as well as iChat on the Mac.
All of the clients let us set a custom status message, but it isn't
displayed in other users' clients. Status messages from buddies with
Google Talk accounts do show up for CommuniGate accounts accessed with
Pandion, Psi, and iChat.

I've raised this issue with support, and I've been told it has been
"escalated with development to get a much fuller response". I thought I
should raise this question here, before this generation gets closed off.

If anyone knows of an XMPP client that can share custom status messages
through CommuniGate successfully, please let me know what you're using.

Thanks,
Alan

we are aware of certain XMPP limitations, such as custom messages and offline messages, that buddies can see when you are logged off. Example, "try me in 3 hours, I am driving down to LA"

We have a list of XMPP extensions, such as the above offline feature, and more, that will come into the next server generation, due in October / Fall 2010. Pronto! will also support these through extensions to the XIMSS API. Which means any XIMSS client, mobile, web, or desktop can take advantage of these features while talking to an XMPP client.

Server 5.3.8 will be out this week, we hope :~) as its undergoing regresion testing now. Server 5.3.8 will include Pronto! 3.8. This will be our last releases, we hope, of the generation 5.x series. Of course bug fixes will be released. The next server will be running in Beta over the Summer, please test and report feedback to us.

I'm confused by what I'm seeing in the XMPP clients I'm testing. I have
an XMPP client connected to CommuniGate. My account has two buddies:
one on GoogleTalk and the other on the same CommuniGate server. I can
see the custom status messages from the GoogleTalk buddy, but I can't
see the custom status messages from the CommuniGate buddy.

Based on these tests, CommuniGate already seems to support the custom
status messages I need. It just doesn't seem to send them out correctly
for CommuniGate users.

What XMPP extension does CommuniGate need to implement to make custom
status messages work? Does it have an XEP number, so I can look it up
online?

I asked about XMPP support for custom status messages specifically,
because I need to support status messages in native clients and status
message updates to GoogleTalk users. I have absolutely no interest in
XIMSS or Pronto.

Hello;

I was working on this very subject with a customer this week. XMPP clients should be fine. If you are having an issue with an XMPP client, send that info to support & open a ticket.

If you mean a XIMSS client, such as Pronto! then yes, these special message features are not supported in XIMSS yet. They will be in the next server generation release schedule for Fall 2010

Jon
