I'm getting the following bounced back to me whenever I try to send
email to a domain on a 1and1.com account. Can anyone help me figure out
what is causing it. 1and1 support says that we are not on any
blacklists or anything, but is unable to give me any clues as to why my
email bounces back.
This is a warning message only.
Your message remains in the server queue,
the server will try to send it again.
You should not try to resend your message now.
Message delivery to 'aaa...@bbbbb.com' delayed SMTP module(domain
bbbbb.com) reports:
mx01.1and1.com: Bad SMTP prompt at the host
Does anyone have any clues or ideas?
Thanks!
-Jim

Do you get their SMTP 220 banner if you telnet to their server on port
25 from your CGP box?
They are all responding from here:
[d.hill@admin ~]$ telnet mx01.1and1.com 25
Trying 74.208.5.4...
Connected to mx01.1and1.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

It appears they are rejecting you because they think your IP address is
dynamic and not static.

we used have this or something very similar sending mail to verizon who
are our isp, their smtp would close off the connection because of some
very odd reverse dns test they did on incoming connections. i think it
related to the name of the actual server (netbios name) being the same
as the external dns related name, both had to be mail for instance..
they must have changed something as we can now send them mail..
what does your log say about the connection, i bet it says they dropped
your connection..

I just tried a telnet from my cable Internet connection at home and it
was blocked based on my cable Internet IP being found on sorbs.net:
550 RBL rejection: Dynamic IP Addresses See: http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?12.202.96.238
If you didn't get a URL or additional comments, I would guess they also
are implementing other means to figure out if an IP is dynamic or not.
What does your IP address resolve to? Does it have any wording that
would signify the IP is dynamic in nature?

Whatever it is Jim, there's one thing you know best: Are you on a Dynamic IP
or not? If so, you should possibly not operate a mailserver on a dynamic IP
directly, but have your mailserver relay outgoing email through your ISP.
There are many reasons to block mailservers operating on a dynamic ip.
If you are indeed on a static IP, then 1&1's configuration is simply broken
and they need to figure it out.
