We are running Communigate Pro 5.2.14 with server side MAPI of 1.52.15.2 and client side MAPI of 1.51.15.1.

Clients are MS Outlook 2003. A few days ago in an overseas office they replaced their Sonicwall firewall with a new Sonicwall firewall.

Both Sonicwalls had the comprehensive gateway security suite installed (ie: IPS, content filtering, etc).

Now Outlook is occasionally reporting the following error when trying to open some e-mails:

Cannot open this item. Error while receiving data through socket [0x80072746]

It is not happening to all e-mails, just some. One user then switched over to a POP3 Outlook profile and it would not download the e-mails that reported the error above. They can view the e-mails OK via webmail and also on their mobile PDA device. A user connected his PC to a wireless network rather than the local network and was then able to open the e-mails which previously reported this error so it is all pointing to the new firewall.

Has anyone come across this error previously and if so what action did you take to fix this?

Thanks & Regards

Paul

Is it possible the new firewall has implemented SMTP/IMAP filtering of
some kind? POP3 may be blocked. What ports are open (with relation to
email)? Can they send emails via SMTP?

SMTP filtering is a problem on a number of Cisco routers and needs to be
disabled or bypassed using another port. Perhaps try opening a
different IMAP/MAPI port and CGP and try getting them to connect to it.

Do the messages have attachments. By default Sonicwall (NSA product
line) will block attachments with VBA macros. 'Restrict Transfer of
MS-Office type files containing macros (VBA 5 and above)' is listed
under Security Services/Gateway AntiVirus/SMTP Settings.
