Hi,

I'm new to this news group and to Macs. Ive got an old 6100 that wont boot
up.

When I power it up, I hear the chime, and the hard disk spools up, but only
reads for a couple of seconds, then goes quiet. There is no video at all,
not even from the bios. The hard disk has also been heard to make some very
strange scratching noises.

I've had the back off it, and the power supply is good. There are four fuses
on the mainboard which apear to be intact. perhaps significantly, the bios
backup battery has zero voltage across it after powering up, and does not
have any stored charge.

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong? Anything cheap that I might try
before I condemn the thing?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Replace the battery. This strange behaviour of some machines (Performa
475 and PPC 6100) usually indicates an empty P-RAM battery.

Good Luck

You've just found it; a dead PRAM battery will deliver the symptoms you
describe. Take it out (it should be easy) and get an exact or near
equivalent from an Apple dealer (expensive) or Maplins (less expensive).

Welcome to the Mac...

Hello:

Buy a battery at Radio Shack. It's $9.95 ($9.98). Take out the battery
from the Mac. -- there's a holder that snaps off. Do that and lift out
the battery. Take it with you to Radio Shack. I don't remember the name
on Shack's label, but it does say something like ...and "for Macintosh."

(I have no financial interest in Radio Shack. Nor would I want any. Now
Apple's a different story...)
