A good, friendly place to ask would be uk.comp.sys.mac, which is much
busier than here but not so busy that it's overwhelming. Yours is exactly
the kind of query that they're happy to deal with there.

However...

I have in my drawer of old things, a system 7.5 CD-ROM. That should boot
and install okay. I can certainly loan it to your friend if they'd like.
