I've just received the following text from a friend, and as you can
imagine I'm out of my depth trying to help. Can anyone assist in his
quest for Amiga internet connection. He's in the USA, so I can't tell him
to sign up with Demon.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
...... i tried AmiPPP and i connected no problem my first try (or at least
i think i did because even though it went through all the motions -
dialing.. authenticating.. network.. blah blah blah - it doesn't really
give you any indication that it was successful, other than that there were
no error messages).. but anyway i digress.. so what i really need is some
ftp software - i don't really care about email or web browsing cause i can
do all that better at work, but what i DO care about is having direct ftp
access to aminet and some of the demoscene portals.. anyway, all the ftp
software i've found on aminet appears to only work with AmiTCP.. so i got
that and configured it to what i think is right, but then how do i dial in
with it and connect to my ISP?? do i need to use both AmiPPP and AmiTCP??
maybe im going about this all wrong.. maybe i should just ask what you use
and how you connect?? this is really frustrating because im loving my new
Amiga - its so nice not having to look at that Commodore logo on it
anymore.. and my accelerator is blazing fast.. i just wanna get some cool
software on it now.. some patches for my games so i can finally use them
again!!

All the best,

Hi:

I use the following stuff and setup:

Home lan layout:

+-----------+ +-----------+ +-----------+ +-----------+
| lupus | | iMac1 | | laptop1 | | Amiga1 |
| SunOS | | System8.5 | | Win95 | | AmigaOS3.5|
| 4.1.3_U1 | |NetPrecenz | | War FTPD | | MiamiDX |
| Solaris | | | | | | Opus5.82 |
| 2.4 | | | | | | |
|192.168.0.8| |192.168.0.3| |192.168.0.4| |192.168.0.1|
+-----+-----+ +-----+-----+ +-----+-----+ +-----+-+---+
| | | | |
| | +------------+ | |
+-------------+ | | +-------------------------+ |
| | | | |
+-+-+-+-+--+ |
| Ethernet | |
| hub | +---+---+
+----------+ | Modem |
| Supra |
| 56e |
+-------+

The Amiga is a 4000T with '060
50 Megs of RAM (most I've ever used at one time 24)
MiamiDX ver 1.0 (A little tricky to setup if you don't follow the
instructions carefully)
Directory Opus Magellan II (It's builtin ftp stuff lets me look and
work with ftp sites just as if they are
another directory on my machine)
The nice thing about MiamiDX is that the dialer is builtin. This is
not a feature unique to Miami though. Genesis does the same thing
and I believe it is essentially the latest version if AmiTCP. My
setup allows me to keep track of my kids online time and kicks them
off when they've exceeded their time limits. Prior to Miami, I used
AmiPPP and AmiTCP also. It was a multistep process involving starting
AmiPPP which started AmiTCP which I had to login to and then run
AmiFTP. Now all I do is run a program that wants to get to the
internet from any of the machines and MiamiDX does the rest.

Later and Have Fun;
Thom

Which would be irrelevant, though there's no reason he couldn't
ask the question here or in comp.sys.amiga.networking...

Err, AmiPPP is not a stack, it's simply a protocol used with
AmiTCP, hence any ftp software that works with AmiTCP (or indeed
Miami) will work when using it.

You don't, you set up the stack (AmiTCP or Miami) to dial-in, you
then use whatever software you want.
