Since about 4.00am I started receiving the subject error :

Tried telnet on it's own and got :

+OK demon POP3 server ready (demon.co.uk)
USER *******
+OK
PASS ********
(Long Delay Here....)
-ERR [IN-USE] could not lock maildrop; is there another connection active?
QUIT
+OK maildrop unchanged

Thought it may be something to do with the email migration and my
password has changed but any but the correct password via telnet gives
an immediate error :

-ERR invalid password (18AC50505D)

Does anyone know what could be causing this and if so is there a
reasonably simple way of rectifying it?

This is causing me a lot of trouble at the moment.

Regards

It happens from time to time when a session crashes out mid way through
but it usually self heals after about 45 minutes wait time.
You are sure that there isn't another connection active?

ISTR they can reset the busy flag sooner if you ask the right person.

Unfortunately after hours it is exactly the same.

I left it for at least 3 hours early this morning.

It is well and truly stuck by the looks of it.

Even tried WebMail. As I load the page it already has "Login failed,
incorrect hostname or password." displayed.

When I try to login again I get "You have already logged out or your
session expired. Please login."

Finally after 35 seconds I receive the message "Your mailbox was
inaccessible. Please try again"

If I resubmit I get the same. If I close the page then on reload I get
the "Login Failed....." scenario above.

Definitely no active connections (That I know of!!!)

Regards.

Check back threads here I think ChrisM had much the same problem and
found or was given a fix that involved deleting cookies.

Try switching off your computer and also router/modem/whatever. Wait 45
minutes then turn all back on and see if that fixes it.

Sounds like the situation I am in/ have had for a couple of months
now. No idea if there is any working cure as I have tried loads of
variations, combinations, etc.; no cure found by tech support except
to recommend me for the next batch for migration..... No idea when
that will be.

My wife had this problem & I traced it to her iphone. Although the
iphone mail client was set to collect & disconnect it did not. I set the
iphone mail client to manual & she now has no problem.

You have been unable to access your Demon email account for a 'couple of
months'?!!!

I have tried deleting 'cookies' as suggested and turning of my router
all to no avail.

With the certain knowledge that I am receiving hundreds of SPAM messages
per day that all but swamp my legitimate work related emails the
situation is becoming desperate.

I will have to ring Demon today but based on other reports here it would
appear that may well be a waste of time.

If I find a solution I will post it here.

Regards.

The Demon staff that participate in the Demon Forum
<http://forum.demon.net/> are being helpful at chasing up support
problems, so you might like to describe the problem there too.

Cheers!

Added a forum message as my promised senior support call is an hour
overdue and I have a meeting.

To clarify: I can usually pick up emails first thing in the morning -
e.g. 7am. After that, sometime later, it just refuses to send or pick
up mail for a long period. then it will kick in again, then drop out
again for the rest of the day. When I am unable to send/ receive
emails, I cannot log into web mail either! I wait for a sound to tell
me that mail has arrived, then quickly send any emails pending.

I use Mailwasher pro to pick up headers, so that I can auto or
manually delete spam, etc. before receiving into Outlook. I have tried
several alternative methods, but all seem to get caught by Demon's
email just refusing to talk or listen. Hence I am sure hat it is Demon
and not me! It is though someone else is accessing their emails and
hence blocking my access. -I have changed passwords, so it is probably
not someone using the same password.

Hopefully clarified, but may not be much use to anyone :-(

Are you also collecting the mail, even POP3 mirrored, or IMAP, on an
iPad or iPod?

This sort of thing happens when you do that. I have to have mine set to
collect only when I say

Hopefully, iOS 6, out shortly, will fix this issue.

No; simply one XP SP3 system.

(I hope to be able to say yes to the iPad sometime soon...)
