You lucky Demon users, 5mb free webspace, you just ftp in and bung your
files into place - no messing around with TelNet, what a service! Wish WE
had service like that!

Who are we? We're Demon COMMERCIAL users, we pay 25 quid a month for the
same 5mb you guys get for free, only we have to TelNet our stuff around,
chmod this, chmod that, cp incoming/blah/blah... cool huh?

So you lucky guys, bask in the glow of your free website with your live
drop-in directories and TelNet-free days! We'll just chmod around here
wondering what nw.demon has that www.demon doesn't and why us commercial
users pay more to get less.

... until us commercial lot wake up and remember the word we are looking
for to describe paying for what is now free. "Suc..rrs, Suck..ors,
Suck..ers", no, I can't remember it.

Is there anything preventing you having 5MB of free workspace under
www.ultratec.demon.co.uk (having looked at your message's headers)? Yes,
you'd lose the advantage of the www.ultradesign.com name, of course.

Erm - hello?

So you how come you don't have access to the CGI or Perl scripts that
Commercial users are allowed to create? Or support via the web support
team?

If you are having to "chmod" a lot, then something is wrong... "chmod" is
CHange MODes, the Unix equivalent of "attrib". It determines who can
read/write files that you've created.

Why not get your monies worth and contact the web support team and air
your grievance with them, and see if you can't get them to fix it or tell
you which piece of magic you're missing.

The system you have is more complex because of the "for your money"
features you're getting :-).

I use htm2 and that avoids all the chmod stuff... I'm sure I read about
it in a FAQ somewhere...

I agree the cp is a pain though :)

As always, technology leapfrogs forward. Commercial web users can
expect to get the new-style server as soon as possible. The important
thing, of course, is to ensure that you don't *lose* any functionality
in any changeover.

Cliff.

Which is way cool. Almost like running your own web server but having
the admin hassle shifted onto somebody else...

Well - if you like, you can use www.ultratec.demon.co.uk, and pay the
25UKP/month for me to have a WWW site, and the ability to create CGI
scripts, have full logging, etc. That way we both win, no?
