I'm seeing exactly the same problem. Today has been the worst ever. Calls to
the helpdesk result in nothing. They play dumb. "What problems? - Nobody
else is reporting anything".

When the problem occurs it's at times when Demon's routers are showing huge
packet loss (I've seen as high as 90%). There are numberous postings in this
newgroup about the same problem

Either Demon's guy's are just plain thick or they've know what's happening
but have been told to igore it.

"You're the 12th person this morning that I've told that we have no
reported problems"

OR

"there's no reported problem, it must be your setup, so I'm not going
to log a fault report", then on the next call they can quite honestly
say "there's no reported problem" ...

Greg you missed one.

"Have you tried one of the other dial-up numbers?"

well it does sound just like a timeout... however, there's so few
details that it could be anything, from a compression failure onwards

This has been discussed several times recently:

1) As soon as you connect, trace route to the dns server to find out
which du you are connected to.

2) When it fails, ring the helpdesk (use a mobile or another line) and
ask them to trace route back to your host.

If the trace route in 2 does not go to the du in one, tell them you
seem to have a lost route and to make a note of the time, the du you
were last logged in to from the access records and the trace route and
send it all to 2nd line network engineering who are investigating it.
If the bob has a problem tell him to email me and I'll give him the
name of the demon person who is looking at the problem (or read the ng
a bit and work mit out yourself).

We (customers) know it happens, but the cause has not yet been
ascertained, which makes it difficult for them (demon) to either fix
it or tell us what it is with our (customer) configs that causes it.
