I have been having problems since about Thursday last with failed
connections. Perhaps that is the wrong way to put it since I dial up as
normal either through DUN or Turnpike Connect on Win 3.1, and I get,
typically the following:

and then that is it. The Sent counter continues to increase, presumably
since Turnpike is trying to connect to the news and time servers but the
Received stays firmly at between 290 and 300. Since this problem occurs
using two different machines and setups I am presuming that the problem
is at Demon's end. I had spent quite an agonising weekend at home
blaming my modem since I had had some initial problems with that. When
these same problems occured at work I realised that it was unlikely to
be my fault or the modems. Very rarely (once at the weekend and once
after many attempts yesterday) I get through.

I would quite happily be proved wrong and I am more than willing to be
told that two entirely different setups both need some attention from me
however if as I now strongly suspect the fault lies with Demon what the
hell is being done about it. I thought the days of such poor service
went a long time ago.

By the way I am using the new 0845 number although switching back to the
Ashford POP gave me the same problem, if I remember rightly.

I shall now attempt (how many times I wonder) to send this!

Richard,

I have had similar problems with the Reading number recently. For me,
trying Reading, if there's a problem trying London (Colt) seems to be
the best balance between cost and reliability.
