ADSL2+ not supporting bitswap causing unstable line in the evening

Hi All,

For the past few months, I have been trying to diagnose a problem why my
ADSL2+ line slows down in the evening.
It is common knowledge that interference from foreign medium wave stations
can cause interference on the telephone line just after dusk. This reduces
the signal to noise ratio (SNR) on certain frequencies (called bins) which
are used to carry bits of data.
Each frequency bin can carry up to 15 bits of data, but is typically less
due to line quality and SNR issues. The ADSL2+ modem and the DSLAM at the
exchance should coordinate how many bits are carried in each bin, and reduce
the number of bits in each bin if there is interference on that frequency,
and allocate those bits to another bin. This is called the bitswap protocol.

If the bitswap protocol doesn't work, the bins with interference will get
corrupted bits. This results in corrupted and dropped packets, and the
subsequent packet re-sends result in a slow bandwidth.

I have a Vigor Draytek 2820Vn ADSL2+ modem, and it would appear that a bug
is preventing it from implementing the bitswap protocol when talking to the
Centillium chipset in the Cable&Wireless DSLAM at my local exchange. As the
SNR drops in the evening, the resultant corruption to packets is making the
line barely useable until a reboot re-trains the modem to the new line
conditions.

An alternate manufacturers modem has been shown to implement the bitswap
protocol succesfully, and is much more stable in the evenings.

Draytek have denied there is a problem, and will not investigate it unless I
can tell them the exact chipset and firmware version of the C&W DSLAM. Demon
will not release this information to me so I have reached an impass.

Does anyone know any details for the Cable&Wireless DSLAMs used for ADSL2+
that could help Draytek track down this bug?
Has anyone else experienced problems with their Demon line in the evenings,
possibly because of this issue ?

I had exactly the same problems with a Draytek 2820 which I've now slung out and
replaced with a simple & much cheaper Thompson Speedtouch which works fine.

You only have the read the Draytek forums to realise that a company that once
produced great products (I still have several Vigor2600's in operation, which
are rock solid) now only seem to produce bug ridden rubbish. The fiasco with
recent 2820 firmware releases is a case in point.

Many Power Line Networking adapters, and other non complient crap, can
also seriously corrupt ADSL2+ signals, with the trash they spew out via
the mains cabling. Not good.

I have an identical setup. With no issues except it reboots on the odd occasion
due to the snr dropping below 6db as does a test belkin router on the same line.

The router gives the performance I would expect when it is up though
and it is patched to the latest firmware.

I have been through the changing filters routine with India but that made no
difference,so as it is not really a major problem and trying to understand what
they are saying is I have given up as it always come back on automatically.

If you can lay your hands on an appropriate Cisco adsl router say an 877 a "sh
dsl int " command will tell you the chipset it is talking to, or it always used
to.

Also following DaveB comments about powerline ,they are not sadly illegal but
you could complain about them interfering with publicly broadcast bands which
is.

I wonder if the bitswap protocol is working in your case. You can tell by
doing a telnet into your router and issueing the 'adsl showbins' command.
This shows how many bits are allocated to each bin. Doing this in the day
and in the evening (assuming no reboot) should show the bits being
reallocated to different bins. I don't see them getting reallocated.
I have also used OrbMT software that does this graphically, and can generate
a video showing how the bit allocation changes (or doesn't change) over
time.
I wonder if you could check for me. It may be just the DSLAM in my local
exchange (EMLGHBO) that is misconfigured.

The 'adsl status' command tells me that the DSLAM Chipset vendor is CTLM,
i.e. Centillium, but nothing more. Does the Cisco router give more info?

Different not more , I had never had need to use the cli for this router I am
missing a lot of troubleshooting features( normally test with my cisco) .I think
a little light reading is required.

Try "sh adsl" on the Draytek. Mine comes up with:

Interesting that Cable & Wireless must have different manufacturers of DSLAM
equipment deployed. I wonder if bitswap works with Broadcomm.
Could you repeat the 'adsl showbins' command (assuming the modem has not
rebooted) to see if any bins have been re-allocated?
If bitswap has occurred, some bins may have a few less bits, and others a
few more bits.
I'll pass this finding on to Draytek to aid with their diagnosis.

I am not 100% sure there has not been a reboot between the 2 sets of readings.

What I will do is do another sh bins tomorrow and post that. Then I am sure
there has not been a reboot between tests, so watch this space.

Most ISP's will do this so a technical problem will not affect your entire
network at once.Makes sense if you think about it ,especially if the problem was
service affecting.

showbins' from ten minutes apart would show the effect.
To check if the modem has dropped the line and retrained, it is possible to
look at the WAN1 Uptime from the 'show status' command. This gets reset to
zero if the line goes down and has to retrain.
It looks like you are using the same firmware as me (232201_A) so I am
surprised that your line drops and retrains. My modem simply suffers from
many CRC errors resulting in dropped packets. Maybe the Broadcomm DSLAM
forces a retrain if the SNR gets too low.

Ok I was not aware of how often the bitswaps occurred ,will do a test before I
go out this evening and post the results.

Look at the web based front end this give the current session(ip session) uptime
and the router uptime since it was last rebooted

The line drops are nothing to do with,the draytek, my Cisco 877 also fell over
because the SNR goes below 6dB which tends to be the lowest most adsl routers
will work on .I am using the drayteks syslog to keep a record of what is
happening but it does not cover everything.


The above problem seems to have been fixed or has gone away. BT( well telent)
have been prating about installing fibre to the cabinet at the end of my street
and I wonder if my copper circuit has been rerouted for some reason.

What is happening now is the layer 2 ppp is staying up and the router does not
loose sync but the layer 3 IP layer is not working. That is more likely to be
the demon homegateway memory issues than my router .The SNR was 11dB last time I
had a problem and the draytek will work quite happily on that.

I am also seeing this but the numbers are very different . I am seeing 20,000 RX
crc errored cells in 20 000 000 received cells.The sysloging does not allow you
to capture the errored cells.

A working theory is that they arrive in large bursts that takes the IP layer
down. Unfortunately I have never been watching when this happens ,I just see the
odd one or two arrive.

I had a little over 13 months of perfect service after my ADSL2+/LLU conversion
then last November I started having issues. I had to drop the mtu to get some

To save you the trouble, I have run each file through the diff program and the
only difference is the titles I have given each test. So nothing changed in over
30 minutes.
