Sending e-mail via iPhone

I have a new iPhone and am trying to set up access to my Demon e-mail on
it. POP3 receiving is working but SMTP sending isn't (yet?).

Is it possible? There are 4 options for authentication for SMTP:
password; MD5 Challenge-Response; NTLM; HTTP MD5 Digest.

It doesn't like any of the passwords I have tried and complains if I
don't have a password!

Thanks for any help/experience you can suggest.

Have you set the smtp server to the one recommended by the ISP/phone
service provider? The Demon one probably won't work, since you're not
connected by Demon.

It is (and has been since shortly after iPhone launched in the UK).

I think you need your dialup/ADSL password and not your POP3 password.

> Thanks for any help/experience you can suggest.

You will want under Outgoing Mail Server in the account you have
set up:

Host Name - post.demon.co.uk
User Name - your Demon hostname e.g. testppp or testppp-adsl
Password - your Password (see above)

Use SSL - ON
Authentication - Password
Server Port - 587

Hope this helps (I already had this set up - but removing and
adding the server again and only filling in the first 3 above, the
iPhone figured out the rest for itself after a few seconds [iPhone
OS 3.1.2]).

Regards, Matthew

Now that is interesting to know for talking to post.dcu when not
connected to Demon for authentication.

Is this available to all customers, or dependant upon the package you
are on?

ISTR that it was available for those on 'Home' but not HomeOffice.

I shall try....

This sort of thing would be a lovely thing to announce to Demon
customers via the announce mailing list or demon.announce (preferably
both).

There seems to be no-one left at Demon who knows about demon.announce,
as since Malcolm Muir left announcements have all gone only to the
mailing list. :(

Perhaps a few request letters to Ms Carter are in order.

Since the facility has been available for, IIRC, some 12-18 months, I
doubt Ms Carter will be terribly enthusiastic about making a huge song
and dance about something which it hard to perceive of as news.

Could you link to the demon.announce post that was made at the time to
herald this highly useful feature?

Curiously, and I know this may be hard to believe, but people don't read
the entire Demon website on a regular basis to see if some new feature
has been added or removed. We sign up to demon.announce and/or the
announce mailing list, which are for that purpose.

Additionally, it would seem sensible for
http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/producthelp/mail/faq/ to mention something
about this possibility!

The previous management did not choose to publicise it in that way.

>Additionally, it would seem sensible for

Since questions about this facility are asked about once every two
years...

I was [and still am] under the impression that it had been mentioned
here before, but extensive use of a search engine failed to turn up
any mention, but it did show a very similar question about the
iPhone in November 2007, and a rather different answer from Matthew
Frost because the feature was not available at the time.

... it can hardly be described as a "FAQ" !

However, it's probably the frequency of asking questions at helpdesk@
which is more relevant.

this page is rather old (much of it dates from when POP3 was introduced
to accompany SMTP delivery to dialups! so it's FAQs about that! which is
why one of them is "What is POP3")

Anyway, it's been pointed out to me (via SMTP and POP3!) that it doesn't
cover TLS access -- which allows you to use your main ("connect")
password rather than a specific POP3 password.

Works for me, and I now only have a 'tenner a month' standard dial-up
account.
