Plunging from ISDN to ADSL

But when I went into the Order on-line page they were talking about a
conversion charge of £80. I wondered if that was for the SDU to ADSL
conversion, or the ISDN to analogue conversion. If the latter I wondered why
it was more than the £42.55 just quoted by Beaty.
I'll get into gear and ring Demon to find out tomorrow, but thought one of
you guys might have experience of this transition.

I couldn't get a figure out of Demon a couple of weeks ago. Demon sent
me to BT who sent me back to Demon !

Am thinking of going the same way myself.
If you follow the link http://sod.ms, I think you'll find that A&A offer
free IDSN to POTS/ADSL conversion, but their ADSL may cost more than
Demon depending how much day time access you need. Is it time to jump
off the Demon ship ?
Anyway - let us know what you find out.

Just make sure you ask for a managed conversion. It costs £50 to BT, but
then an engineer does come round and check it out. If it doesn't work
for any reason then you go back to ISDN.

Well, I've taken the plunge indeed, Router ordered, change ordered via
Demon. No £50 set-up fee, £80 conversion fee became £42.55 added to my next
Beaty bill. I'll come back with more info as and when.
What is the ADSL equivalent of this news group? I've always found the
technical/Barrybashing level of this group almost ideal.

5th, so it took 10 days in all and it went very smoothly. Now I'm just
trying to get BT to make the last changes to my account (to convert from
business to private) then I should get an updated bill and find out if I
have managed to save money along the way. Perhaps not this quarter, but I
expect to save quite a bit a month from now on.

I didn't manage to save money this quarter (moving from the full 24hr
surftime deal to BB) but even with the cost of the router it was only a
little more. If I had bought a cheaper modem I might have broken even - if I
had timed it before half way through the quarter would have made quite a
difference too.
Next quarter the bill should be loads lower.
I'm very happy with the service so far.

Having less luck here. Neither of out POTS lines are short enough for
ADSL, and apparently the ISDN line can't be converted either for reasons
unspecified.
But the post code is supposed to be good for ADSL, so if a new line is
installed, there is some hope that it might work.
Unfortunately, Demon can't order new lines for you, and as far as I can
tell from BT, the won't guarantee that any new line will support ADSL.
Have now ordered a new line via http://sod.ms/ who seem to be much more
clued up and will undertake to install on a 'no ADSL, no fee' basis.
If it works, I guess that means I get a second ISP as a side effect.
Don't know if I really want to change ISP. I guess once I've got the
line in I can change to Demon broadband if I want to.

putting 20 pair into the house. It took fornicating ages, but rather than
decades old cable swinging from pole to pole like a demented gay who *liked*
noise I suddenly had nice clean copper routed fairly directly from the
exchange.
Now, that is useless nostagia. But I got it by going Business rate,
demanding 'Data Services' when I ordered the line and whinging about quality
(You sold me a line supposed to be V22 capable but (Yes, that long ago) it's
shite).
I suspect they have got wise to some of these things...
Good luck with sod.ms, let us know how you get on. I used to prefer Demon
for 'religious' reasons - now it's just 'cos I can't be arsed to change my
email address. I suspect that once the years contract is up I'll be doing a
quick compare and contrast.
