Help: what causes these Winsoc error messages?

windows socket error: (11001), on API 'Async Lookup'
windows socket error: (10049), on API 'connect'
windows socket error: (10049), on API 'connect'
I started getting these error messages boxes which pop up every 10 seconds
or so, cascading and filling up the screen.
Any idea what causes those? What should I do?
Environment:
Windows98SE
Pentium III
Connected to home network to a Nexland router (DHCP)
no dial up
File and print sharing enabled
