Just lately I have been getting "invalid database file c:\program
files\mail\mailbase"
usually I clear the error message try again and it works. Sometimes it
"rebuilds the database" - "all data successfully recovered". So far I
have never failed to get it working.

I have used turnpike almost since it was first introduced. My first
installation was from floppy disk. I'm now using Version 6.06U. I'm
wondering if my mailbase now exceeds in size what the software allows
for. Any suggestions?

How big is your MSPOOL? There is a hard limit of just under 4GB.

If your MSPOOL is not close to the limit then there is the possibility
that your hard disk is on the way out - Turnpike seems to be quite good
at picking up early signs of failure.

i've been getting that, too, along with software error messages [e.g.
mspool sofware error 257]. the start of it coincided with the computer
crashing while trying to videoconference on skype, and with firefox
failing to load [possibly damaged by the crash?]. TP was open when the
crash came.

i've rebuilt the database several times.

at one stage i got this message while trying to send a large file:

'an int divide by zero fault occurred at D:\TURNPIKE\bin\TURNCORE.DLLL
0001:0015eb14'

on another occasion when trying to send an email i got a message about
'another process has locked...'

during these problems the size of my TP folder was 4.63gb, meaning no
doubt that the mailbase was well over 4gb. since reducing it to 3.70gb
all seems OK. however, the problems also occurred when skype was in 'on'
mode. i reduced the mailbase size and put skpye in off mode at the same
time.

thoughts on the causes, anyone, and on the precise meaning of (i)
'an int divide by zero fault occurred at D:\TURNPIKE\bin\TURNCORE.DLLL
0001:0015eb14' (ii) 'another process has locked...'

Ah, i see (ii) is on d.i.s.t. at google groups:

http://groups.google.com/group/demon.ip.support.turnpike/browse_thread/th
read/7da30e86157489a2/2d19b434af87d670?q=another+process+has+locked

One possible culprit was named:

"It looks like Microsoft Windows Search (under XP) might be the culprit.
I thought I had excluded the Turnpike files from the search, but I
appear not to. so I have now and will see how it goes."

but that may not have been relevant to my situation.

Have you checked the drive, eg with CHKDSK?

One cause you have already found: TP does not work properly if any of
its files are 4Gb or over. Indeed you're probably lucky that it works at
all.

If you habitually run with a mail file of 3.99Gb, you should really
reconsider your system! Presumably most of this is attachments: do you
really, really need to keep them in the mail file? Can't you export them
to elsewhere and declutter the file? It would make operation much
faster, as well as stopping you hitting the 4Gb limit. And backing up a
100Mb file is so much easier than a 4Gb!

Yes. it didn't find any problems...but i'll run it again.

i also defragged the drive, though defrag said it wasn't necessary.

It's been laziness.

Time for more file zapping!

any idea what the message:

>>'an int divide by zero fault occurred at D:\TURNPIKE\bin\TURNCORE.DLLL
>>0001:0015eb14'

means?

Thanks for your comments above.

I had problems with skype - it seemed to want to take over my computer
and I got rid of it but that was ages ago.

I got a divide by zero fault message the other day but I have no idea if
turnpike was active at the time.

I am using XP and I do search - I didn't know you could exclude
something from the search other than a complete drive.

the divide by zero fault message i got was in a pop up window that said
TP was being terminated due to a serious problem.

i think it's an microsoft error message that covers a multitude of sins.

Actually it covers only one sin, but one that can occur in a multitude
of circumstances. You cannot divide by zero because the result is
infinite. As a programmer when it happens in my own code it tells me
that I have forgotten to initialise something. In normally stable
software either you have been led down a logic path which was never
anticipated or, more probably, there has been corruption of data in
memory.

Chris
