If there are any Nilly users on board I would be grateful for help in
configuring TP.
MY account is the dsl gotadsl.co.uk type.
I had Turnpike 6.02 previously set to mirror mail from nilly
Help please
Cheers

If you just installed 6.04 on top of 6.02, then all your settings should
have remained the same...
How did you do the install/upgrade, and what questions (if any) were you
asked by the installer?

Erm ... I expect Jim (like me) did read your first message properly.
The point is that if you want to install Turnpike on a new machine with
an existing ISP, you should follow the very clear instructions in the
Helpfile. These include copying the data files first and then installing
Turnpike over the top.
That way, you don't lose your settings. Anyway,
>Configure POP3 mail collection
>Server name pop3gotadsl.co.uk
>set to mirror
>Port pop3
That much is probably OK - you need to create a mail log (click the
debug box) and then examine that to see what is wrong.
The most likely thing is probably specifying your username in the wrong
format ... didn't we go through all this with you only a few weeks ago?
Back then we discovered that it needed to be ...

My guess (and it's no more than that) is that there should be a dot
between "pop3" and "gotadsl", by analogy with your outgoing mail server
name of smtp.gotadsl.co.uk.

With, I assume, the correct username/password. What does a debug log
show?
Thanks John. But having again checked, there is a dot in the correct
place. I just typed it like above.

What error do you get in the turnpike log?

Jim Smith
Because of their persistent net abuse, I ignore mail from
these domains (among others) .yahoo.com .hotmail.com .kr .cn .tw
For an explanation see <http://www.jimsmith.demon.co.uk/spam>
I am also a Nildram user
My settings are -
Outgoing server -
If connected to Nildram you don't need to put an account name or
password for smtp
For ppo3 -
server pop3.gotadsl.co.uk
Mailbox xx...@gotadsl.co.uk where xxxx is the bit before the @ in your
gotadsl email address
password hopefully you know it
I would add that I had an existing Nildram ADSL before the dsl service
started, so perhaps I am accessing the old smtp server
Hope this helps

Erm thanks for that Terry. But September 2003 is a tad over a couple of

problem then was a mistyped name. Unfortunately its not that this time.
And noooooo I didn't copy over the data files. nuff said eh ?

Can you access your mail box via the web mail?
You can get configuration and setup details for your account at
https://www.userarea.co.uk/nildram/index.aspx
Their support number is also quite good if you ring during office hours
>And noooooo I didn't copy over the data files. nuff said eh ?
I suggest you start again, following the recommended procedure and, when
(and if) that goes wrong, come to ask for help.
I would suggest, however, that you also make sure that you know the
right login name and password for the POP3 box, since your log shows
that one or both of these is incorrect.

Do not change the Reply-To: address -it will work if you use it within 30 days.
After that visit <http://theunderwoods.org.uk/contact.html> for a current
contact address. Do not write to the From: address.
Yes I can access my mail box via the web. No problems there

Reason I didn't copy over data files was due to failed hard drive

Fair enough John. We live and learn

I did write all the settings down and used them, which has served me
well over the years. I also do know my login name and password for POP3
box.
However, In Nildrams wisdom they have the .gotadsl.co.uk domain and
nildram.co.uk domain. I have the gotadsl.co.uk domain. I will ring them
today. Thanks for the help offered.

Your log doesn't show whether you have mis-typed your logon details or
not - but it looks likely that either USER or PASSWORD is typed
incorrectly. Remember that passwords are case sensitive.
You need to check the "debug" box in Configure, Email Transfer in order
to generate a full log, which should then tell you which of the two is
wrong.

Perchance that AVG is anything to do with this ?

>Perchance that AVG is anything to do with this ?
AVG should be checking anything written to your disk. You may also have
asked it to check the content of incoming and outgoing mail (personally,
I wouldn't).
What it should not do is check the dialogue with a server.
Your log shows that the password has failed to authenticate. The most
likely reason is that you have mistyped it.

Your password is not.
I would recommend typing it in again. Make sure that your Caps Lock key
is off and that you observe capitalisation within the password
precisely.
It may be worth ensuring that you don't include any leading or trailing
spaces.
A safe way of doing this is to type the password in clear text and cut
and past it to the form. However be aware of potential problems if
anyone else has access to your computer.
Why is the computer more vulnerable after that activity, than if the
password was typed into a "****" box? [Just curious].
--
Roland Perry
Many thanks for all that offered help.
>Why is the computer more vulnerable after that activity, than if the
>password was typed into a "****" box? [Just curious].
I don't think I said the computer was more vulnerable, but your POP3
account would be. If what I wrote implied anything else I am sorry,
though it clearly expressed more rather than less caution than I meant
which is error in the right direction.
When it was typed straight into Turnpike it was not using the same ****
box that you were probably thinking of. As I understand it, it doesn't
get left lying around. (Whereas a Microsoft one could be).
In any case, by cutting and pasting you have stored it in at least three
places, only one of which is Turnpike.
I'm not sure why that's the case.
>When it was typed straight into Turnpike it was not using the same ****
>box that you were probably thinking of. As I understand it, it doesn't

When I set up a POP3 account inside TP, it provides me with a "***" box
to type it into.
>In any case, by cutting and pasting you have stored it in at least
>three places, only one of which is Turnpike.
And two of which are in RAM only (or to be pedantic, probably dozens of
places in RAM). But why is that more of a security problem than when
your password is stored in clear in RAM when TP and the TCP/IP stack
send it to your ISP?
Or were you expecting someone to type the password into a file, and then
save the file. I agree, that would be a very unwise thing to do. There's
no need to save the file in order to allow a cut and paste.
