I am getting Delivery Status Notification
From:Turnpike_SMTP_Client@nutbr....demon.co.uk

**535 5.7.0 Error: authentication failed: bad protocol / cancel**

It has happened now for several emails sent in the last hour. Everything
was fine before that.

I have googled this and it brings up some previous DIST discussions
about Turnpike problems spanning several years so this is not a new
problem.. I can't see a clear solution there but there is a wiki
explanation under **How to fix (Error 535) ? ** :-

535 Error Code is caused in one way or another by misconfigured system
files in your windows operating system.
So, If you got 535 Error then We strongly recommend that you Download
(Error 535) Repair Tool.

Has anyone had this problem before, and solved it this way or any other
way? If with the suggested Repair Tool is that a really safe and easy
thing to do?

PS for those following my saga with the reconnection after Demon cut us
off a couple of weeks ago, I finally got reconnected last week by Iain a
DIST Turnpike angel, and have had no problems until this 535 error just
now.

I have 17 previous dist posts, from 2012 on, about these SMTP
authentication failures. Lots of various information, but it seems some
failures can be due to a glitch at the Demon end, and that's what I'd
expect in the absence of any very recent personal configuration changes.

Any (dis)confirmations from anyone, before I assume the problem is at
Eileen's end?

Can someone please remind me -- I no longer use Demon -- what is
currently used as SMTP authentication password -- the same as used for
POP3 access, or the Demon login password. And is a Login for SMT
authentication actually required if one's already logged in to Demon?

Also, I'm wondering, incidentally, what remedy if one has forgotten
one's Demon password.

The first thing I notice is that you are sending to
post.demon.co.uk. You are collecting mail from mail.demon.co.uk
which is the new server so I conclude that you have been migrated
to the new mail system. With the new system you should be sending
to smtp.demon.co.uk.

So, the first think to do is go to Connect, configure, email
transfer and change the Mail Gateway to smtp.demon.co.uk. Save
the changes and see if that helps.

I see messages like that on the Internet, I run away fast.

Five gets ten it will give you a virus, be ransomware, or worse.

It's easy to find such sites. Another attributes Error 535 reports to a
corrupt registry entry rather than the standard SMTP code that it is,
has a remarkably similar opinion about Error 635 and Error 735, and goes
under the name of wefixerrors.com. I think Eileen has the nous to walk
away on seeing the actual site.

I've seconded MarkU's advice, to post to smtp.demon.co.uk rather than
the superseded post.demon.co.uk. It could be that Demon have only now
got around to disabling the latter.

That will almost certainly be the answer. See:

http://forum.demon.net/topic/demon-outgoing-email-settings-1

...customers, may now experience issues using our legacy outgoing email
server address of post.demon.co.uk.

The outgoing email server address of smtp.demon.co.uk should now be
used.
