w2000 problems on first connection to Demon

Hi,
we've recently bought a PC (Windows 2000) and I can't seem to make use
of my existing Demon account with it. I've been through the Internet
wizard thing a few times, I've spoked to Demon support, but I don't seem
to be getting anywhere. I wanted it to work with my existing 0844 number
and it seems to connect, and then I can faintly here high-pitched modem
whistles but after a bit the message "no answer" appears and it re-tries
with the same result. I've tried several numbers - all with the same
result.

Oh and I unticked the 3 boxes in the Properties/Network thing as Demon
told me to.

It almost sounds as if need a "wait" command after Demon answer, but I've
no idea how to do that and I'm probably completely wrong.

Can anyone offer any advice, please? Cheers.

Does your modem work with any other service?

I have just done a similar operation very successfully (W2000 Pro, TP
5.01). I copied all my Turnpike folder to the new computer (can't
remember whether I had to change its paths), then reinstalled TP 5.01 on
top of itself. Everything worked like a charm except that I don't hear
the modem making connection - which sounds a bit like part of your
experience.

I use Win2K and have never had any problems of my PCs making. Check all
the properties pages for the connection.

General - nothing special here, make sure the phone number is correct.
0844 041-6662 is the usual night time number. If you try using this
after 8am and before 6pm on a weekday it won't connect. I'm not sure if
disabling CLID on your phone line causes a problem with Demon - it
certainly does with some ISPs.


Options - only 'prompt for phone number' is ticked of the dialling
options.

Security - only the 'typical' radio button is selected

Networking - PPP: is selected, not SLIP, and only TCP/IP is selected in
the lower window. Digging deeper:

PPP settings: Enable LCP extensions and Negotiate multil-link
are ticked, enable software compression is not.

TCP/IP properties: Obtains IP address automatically, mine has
the DNS server numbers (158.152.1.43 and 158.152.1.58) entered but I
believe it can work with obtaining the DNS server addresses
automatically.

Advanced properties: Make sure 'use default gateway on remote
network is ticked', mine also has 'Use IP header compression' ticked.

Sharing - don't enable this at least not until you have the connection
working.

Thanks for the advice - I'll give those a try. As you'll see in my other
post though, things are becoming slightly clearer.......

BT for the "surf together" 0844 number, and don't wish to pay them again

My Amiga is happily working on the same phone line without problems on any
of the numbers. :-/

Demon didn't have an explanation as such, but took my phone number. I
haven't heard anything from them yet.

Any thoughts as to possible solutions?
