I know I have seen the answer to this question at some time on one of
the Demon groups but I cannot remember where? I can't even recall where
the Demon service information and FAQs are? But I've been having one of
those 'treading in treacle' weeks!

I would like to use the internet chat facilities. Are these available
via Demon and if so what software is recommended? I would be very
grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

Many thanks.

FAQs are the first place to look ...

demon.answers - it is a moderated, low traffic newsgroup and well worth
subscribing to.

As a Demon customer, you are your own host on the internet - so you can
connect up with anything you like (that will have you!). Demon does have
its own IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server, so this is a sensible one to
use - although by no means the only one available.

The FAQ for this newsgroup, posted here (and to demon.answers) on
Saturday has plenty of details about IRC, including software and
settings. If you are thinking about the more one-to-one nature of Net
Meeting, have a look at www.microsoft.com (Net Meeting hasn't made it to
the FAQ yet, but might perhaps appear at its next major update).

The Internet has a service called IRC in which you use a program to
access thousands of IRC channels, "rooms" in which you can chat in to
other people. I recommend the program mIRC, which can be downloaded from
www.mirc.com . This comes with a description of IRC, and commands to use
when connected.
There are many IRC servers you can access, you are given a choice in
mIRC.

Howard, you messy pup!! Forget about the FAQ's and clean your kitchen
floor. The exercise will do you good. With no mess around you can
start afresh and get a new perspective on your life. FAQ's will seem
much less important.

Howard. I'm in the same position as you. I used IRC facilities about
12 months ago using different software but I can't find anything in
Turnpike to help. The trouble is that the other software was Shareware
and I can't remember where or how I got it :-( If anyone out there
can help I would be obliged.

The usual irc choice is mIRC. It is on the demon FTP site in the
appropriate directory (/pub/ibmpc/win3/.... or
/pub/ibmpc/win95/...)

You will find the help you need in the FAQ for this newsgroup, posted on
Saturday - I think I might have already posted this reminder in answer
to the original poster ... but news continues to be very delayed :-(

As a 'newbie' to IRC, I find mIRC an excellent program - you may too..
Take a look at www.mirc.co.uk and follow the info from there to download
a copy. The Demon IRC server is at irc.demon.co.uk - port 6667

I can recommend mIRC, which can be downloaded from http://www.mirc.co.uk
This is shareware - send GBP10.00 if happy with the programme. Fully
documented... great fun!!...

Demon has its own IRC server... you don't half meet some weird demonites
out there!!

I had similiar problems myself for quite a while, but the solution for
me was IRC or Internet Relay Chat... If this is what you are looking
for, then try going to "Http://www.Dal.net" for more information. This
is the home of an IRC network that I frequent, and contains links for
downloads of all the relevant software. Also, if you're running Win95,
be sure to use the Pirch .85 beta, rather then mIRC. (You'll understand
what I mean when you've read it a lil). The flood protection alone is
worth the trouble.

Dear all,

Best chat I have found is Java chat. Go to the Alta Vista Search engine (by far
the fastest) and type in Java Chat. The chat is fast due to Java unlike other
internet chat lines. Most of java sites are good but some are pay as you
waaaa...sorry, play. MS Internet Explorer 3.0 supports Java.
