The local cable company, NTL, apparently are using something like a:
3 COM US Robotics CMX Home Connect cable modem
which fit-your-own is about 150 UK pounds, and 3 COM apparently
have a range of ADSL modems as well.
Of course, they will only support the connection of PCs running
MS Windows or Macs, not even PCs running LINUX. And NTL only
support a non-NAT setup, and do not allow you to run your own
servers which might put too much load on their network.
Demon themselves appear to use BT for ADSL, and BT talk about
different connection cost involving direct connect or networked
ADSL modem/router/splitter types. But Demon are only currently
supplying the 95 UK pounds per month service, where as the NTL
service is 40/month.
Looking around the various options for hardware seem to be USB
port or 10-base T ethernet connections, but everyone seems to be
very unclear about any appropriate software, NAT or non-NAT.
Another option presumably would be to put an old PC running LINUX
in as a firwall, and then network the Risc OS machine to it?
Further info, please?
