I have to say that having been a Demon subscriber for many years,
usually with little or few problems, it does seem that over the past
several weeks something has altered at Demon Internet.

Our connections here are usually good and first time attempts. However
there is now a definite pause having logged on and before news or mail
transfers commence. It used to be pretty instantaneous, and it no longer
is, which leads me to think that Demon have altered something. BTW, we are
using a USR Sportster Flash 56k modem and usually connect at 52k. However
the download speed is nearly always poor, at only a maximum of some 7k to
8k cps, sometimes even a lot less, maybe down at 4k to 5k.

On our other ISP, Freeserve using an MRI modem, we connect at 45333 and get
download speeds of over 10k cps - always!.

I can't believe it's the BT line because its the same line on two different
RiscPCs and also because we allegedly have one of the best (better) telephone
links in the UK here in Inverness. So it must be down to a Demon problem me
thinks.

Considering that Demon is a commercial and non-charitable company they really
ought to get their act together. As someone has already stated, us RISCOS users
are tolerated but not supported, For sure there are a lot of us, especially
among the retail/professional groups, and demon could find a rather large dent
in their income if we all pulled the plug for a freebie ISP.

Ditto. I spent a while trying different romps and that made no
difference at all.

I'm in Edinburgh.
